MG MG Y Type - Interior mirror
Hi, Getting down to some boring detail now...sorry... One of our number has been good enough to lend me an internal mirror as a pattern to make another.... my question is...was the glass originally unframed.... and what was the colour of the rear of the piece of glass... the one I have is white...? Thanks Rob |

yes unframed. I believe the back of mine may well be brown. Do you need me to check Rob? |

Rob, Let There Be Y's (Page 201)confirms that "The Y and YB were equipped with a frameless and backless mirror glass". Doesn't say what colour for the glass back but it does say that the frame and 2 piece clamp were painted crackle black, so I painted mthe back of my mirror glass that colour while I was at it! None of the 'full frontal' pics in any of the MG books I have show any cars with a white painted rear view mirror, but none show whether they were black, or brown or another dark colour. Neil |

I have a couple of original interior mirror glasses - all are either chipped, cracked or not functioning well as mirrors - they are all wrinkle black on the back - same as the frame - With Neil I concur. Tony |

Rob: there are no insignificant details in a good rebuild! My own car confirmed Neil's quoted extract above from LTBY - spray crackle black seems to have been the order of the day for the back of the glass and for the clamp. I got some tinted mirror glass of the right thickness cut and chamfered to size by a glazier. Apparently frameless rear-view mirrors in cars have been illegal for some time, because of the danger of breakage, but I don't think this is retrospective! |
