MG MG Y Type - interior re upholstery

Hi has any one out there bought the upholstery kits ie front and back seat covers and door cards from NTG, If so are they well made and a good fit. What experiences did you have fitting them. A upholstery firm in yorkshire has quoted me for the above work but is very expensive.

Hi Chris

In the 3(4?) year restoration of YB Demelza (PO name) (its in John Lawsons book) I am recovering all the trim and recolouring the seats. Apart from the expense I thought rather than the 'Hollywood' look I wanted a more used look hence the recolouring and yes I could not justify the £2000 odd for new seat covers.
My seats were in a poor condition but have come up to what is for me an acceptable standard

As for the trim ie door cards back and front cards and all the small bits, these have come out very well. One secret is to use 'stretchy' vynal such as woolies ambla which makes it much easier to get round awkward shapes and its good quality.

The door card are most diffcult because of the pockets but after talking to Dave Jones who had restitched his door pockets I have to date done the front cards with the backs to do, you do need patients and a thimble.

I have a number of before middle and after pictures if you are interested.

Recovering the old cards (if you have them) also means they will fit!

The leather pocket fronts and arm rests were recoloured

Have a go, its very satisfying

Best regards

Brian

Hi Brian thanks for your reply, but my problem is that the leather on the seats are moth eaten and falling apart so I have no alternative but to reupholster and I do not have any door cards, just some I have borrowed to use as patterns. I always knew when I started the restoration it was going to cost me, but being a yorkshireman I have deep pockets and short arms!!!!

But Pickerings of Bradford want 5K to recover seats and door cards which I believe is a rip off !! so I am stll investigating other options and upholsters.

Hi Chris, John Hall here - remember my visit in freezing April? - man, 5000 in your money sounds steep, so I really hope you get good info from other threaders. I'll lurk with interest. Cheers mate. John.
J.P. Hall

Hi John, nice to hear from you, its still cold here!!!!!

You will be pleased to know today I have now found a guy local to me who carries out upholstery from his home workshop. His work looks to be of a excellent standard, at present he is retrimming a £200,000 Lamborghini for a customer.

The upside is he quotes under 2K !!!the downside is he can't get it done before May, but hey ho, for a saving of 3K I am prepared to wait.

I hear its pretty warm over there at present, my brother, in Sydney, keeps sending me photos of him and family messing about on his Yacht,Lucky sod!!!!!

Cheers Chris

Hi Chris

Have a word with Peter Veilvoye. You no doubt saw his new YA on the MGCC Stand at the NEC in November. The trimming was undertaken by a lady near Gloucester. She is an ex-Morgan Car Co trimmer. He was very pleased with the outcome and indeed had her business cards at the show. It would mean bringing your seats and door cards down. I reckon that it would be considerably cheaper than your supplier in Bradford.

If you need Peter's contact details then e-mail me off line.

Happy New Year

Sincerely

Jerry

Hi Chris
The lady Jerry refers to is Diana, she is between Malvern and Worcester. Mine was her first Y Type and I think she found it very challenging but made a good
job. Photo attached. I took everything out and left it with her, then refitted myself. Will cost more than I paid but still very reasonable and compares with your local find. No good if you are in a hurry.
Phone Vantasia 01905831479 ask for Diana.
Peter

P W Vielvoye

Jerry, Peter thanks for your info. I have asked Richard my local trimmer to add my trimmimg job to his list. If it looks like the job will be further delayed I will contact Diana, thanks for the contact details.

It may mean I will miss the Y spring weekend deadline I set my self, but just over 2 years for a full body off restoration was always challenging. However I will still be there in my trusty TD.

Cheers Chris

Chris,
I have a name for you, a little nearer to N Yorkshire.
Tony Archer, Huddersfield. A Google search will find him.
He retrimmed Y7207 when david Hilliam owned it, including headlining, doors and grab handles. I can't remember the exacy cost, because the bill went with the car when I sold it, but it was less than £1000. More like £750 if i recall correctly , but it was mid to late 1990's.
I thought it was an excellent job.

It isnt in the Nottingham area but I highly recommend Paul Farmer in Southampton - he redid mine to an extremely high standard.
