MG MG Y Type - JACK ALL OIL?
What is the correct modern oil for the Jack all system here in the USA. Is any hydralic jack oil OK? wm |

Motor cycle fork oil is fine. If you need more info, let me know. Regards Paul |

How about shock fluid, such as the stuff sold by Moss in the US? |
Paul Briggs |
No, sorry only motor cycle fork oil! See the MGCC Y Reg Datasheet on Jackalls. Regards Paul |

Motor cycle fork oil. Neil. |

Motor Cycle fork oil in Sydney is very, very expensive. I have been using Automatic transmission fluid in my forks for many years with good results. Not sure if it would be any good in the YA though. ATF equates to about a 15 weight oil. Marty |

OK, got the fork oil. Is there any preference for a particular viscosity? There was a variety of weights available, so I chose a 10 wt., somewhat at random. Also, I finally tried the jacks for the first time since I bought the car. The front jacks work great, but the rears appear to be stuck. Any "approved" method for unsticking? I don't want to force something I shouldn't and break it. |

Now it looks like you are in for something, because most probably your rear rams have corroded through disuse. And they seem to be hell to disassemble. So far I have not yet dared to tackle mine. But look at the archive of this BBS, where you can find lots of comments on the Jackall system. Concerning the right fluid: John Lawson in his green book on the Y mentions motorbike fork or automatic transmission fluid (which incidentally is red in color, as "Red Jackall Fluid" used to be) |

David Hague (MGCC Y Reg Regalia) has all the datasheets - including a copy of the original Smiths Jackall manual! You can do a lot worse than buy them! Price list downloadable at http://www.mgcars.org.uk/clubs/yreg.html also David's phone number! Paul |

Did you know that Jackalls were even used in the manufacturing of the Y? In the book by Len Shaw "Rallying in a Works MG", there is a chapter describing the cars. There you can see a photo of a young worker assembling the front suspension. The Y's chassis is mounted on a rig that has a Jackall ram and pump fitted to it. The ram obviously serves to compress the coil spring of the suspension, pushing from below, so the wishbones can be inserted. Smart, isn't it? |

An even more interesting production is a repro booklet published by the MGCC Yreg called Enjoying the MG Y Type. It is a collection of interesting reprints of articles including an entire build of a Y from chassis to delivery! Excellent value. Paul |

Yes, the enjoying the Y reproduction is very interesting and well worth having... as are the various service data sheets that are available. |
