MG MG Y Type - Jack all ram diameter

I am rebuilding my jackalls. Have them apart and new 2 part seals but need to know what the correct diameter of the rams are to fit correctly with the seals. Plan to talk to a local plating house about building them up and finish with a coat of hard chrome.
Thanks Frank

If you've got them apart you could just measure them,----The platers would know where to measure them to get the diameters right for you, they wouldn't be worn for the full length, there would be some original good areas there somewhere

Thanks William for the suggestion. The rams have been previously apart and machined to clean up pitting so not exactly the right size. Have calipered the seal and appears to be 1.00 inch and it does fit the rams not bad on three, one fitting loosely. Probably get the rams done to 1.00 inches plus extra to get a good seal for the jack oil.

If you get stuck, I have some old ones here i could dismantle and measure as a last resort

I have used the article by Neil Wakeman on Restoring Jackall Jacks available on the Y registry under technical help. It was a big help in taking the jacks apart and will use it again when I put them back together.

Thanks Frank, for you kind comments about my article on restoring Jackall jacks.

I remember that, at the time, my friend the Late Malcolm Hickman and I tried every trick in the book (and a few other tricks as well) to remove the foot of each jack, all without success. In the end, we took a couple of very deep breaths and attacked the jacks with a hacksaw fitted with a fine blade and that worked a treat. Before refitting the feet, make sure that you tidy up the hacksaw cut cut in a lathe to ensure a good close fit when you reassemble things. It's a tricky job but if I can do it, anybody can!

Hi Neil
I fortunately did not have to cut the feet off, had a friend who owns a custom manufacturing shop take them apart to repair but took too much off the rams one in particular so have decided to replace them. Talked to a plating house here about building them up to size but can not do.
