MG MG Y Type - Jackall fittings
Hey all, the pipe that connects the Jaackall fluid canister to the pump leaks at the pump. It appears that the "bead" may be a little bit smaller, at the leak site than the one at the tank. (It sits down further in the pipe nut). Are these beads and/or new pipes available? As ever, thanks, Tom |

Tom, When the cars were built, all the brass "olives" (that what the beads are called), would have been imperial sized - 1/4". As you can imagine it is getting difficult to find them in this size & they are often replaced with 6mm metric size. This metric size is 0.35mm smaller than 1/4". You might be lucky & stop the leak with a little application of Teflon tape, as this pipe carries no pressure, only the "head" of oil above the pump. If the olive is cracked right through, you might also try a sealant but removing all traces of fluid will be required. Good Luck |

Hey all, another question. The leak at the pump continues after replacing the pipe and the olives. Finally, I positioned a mirror to allow me to look up into the "hole". What I see is a brass ring or tube. Now the question; Should that brass be there or is it the remains of an earlier "repair"? Thanks, Tom |

Hi Thomas My immediate guess is that what you are seeing may well be the remains of the previous olive compression fitting. I would suggest removing the pump from the car and carefully removing the olive and refitting everything and seeing if you still get a leak. Paul |

Hey all, a couple of discoveries. Turns out that the pipe connecting the supply to the pump is the same as 5/16 inch refrigeration tubing in the USA. They have the olives and tubing readily available. I removed the front cover of the pump and discovered that the "brass thing" was/is a filter to protect the pump. It is a hollow brass screen in the shape of a tube. Still working on the leak. Tom |

Yes indeed there is a screen filter in the pump Thomas. Have you read the pages on Jackall Advice in the Technical Centre? Paul |

I have the same problem with leak at both ends of pipe from reservoir to pump so will be interested to hear of your solution . Replaced the pipe and olives but leak continues so will try some tape or sealant . Would a additive sealant be any use mixed with the oil ? |

Hey, E.Winters and all, this leak makes me nuts! Finally, I coated the "olive" with non hardening "permatex". No leaks for 6 hours. I think that the "seat" of the female fitting is probably scored or damaged in some small way. Concerning compression fittings; The theory is that the nut just tightens the "olive" so that it distorts to seal the pipe and the seat. No sense in sealing the threads. They only serve to tighten the nut on the olive.. Hope this helps someone. Be well, Tom |
