MG MG Y Type - Jackall fluid/oil
I have acquired a one family owned YA almost by default, but that's another story. Everything seems to work but the fluid is low for the Jackall system. What is a modern day fluid/oil I can use? Regards, Don ![]() |

Hi Don, welcome to the world of Ys. I can not answer your question but l sure you will find it on the imgytr website. Link at top of page. Cheers Stuart |

Sound like good fortune has come you way with your YA acquisition Don. Any hydraulic jack fluid will do the job. Check out our web page http://www.mgccyregister.co.uk/technical-information for more details. We would be interested to see some details of your YA posted and perhaps a photo. Peter |

Hey Donald, I just rebuilt the jackall system on my YT. Motorcycle fork oil works well, I used 20 weight. Tom |

Thanks for the replies, it looks like auto trans. fluid in it at the moment, would this be OK? Next, the sunroof is hard to open, how can I lubricate this? Regards, Don |

" ... Almost by default" ... So tell us the story!! Wishing you many years of enjoyment - may your Jackalls keep you uplifted and your Drain Tubes always be clear. Yours, John. |

Thanks John....drain tubes...? now that's something else I'll have to look in to (not literally!) The story, I was asked by the original owner's grandaughter to fix a few problems, brakes, electrical, tidy up etc. They finished up offering to sell it to me on the condition they have first option to buy it back if ever I decide to sell. So far I love it, more so when I can get the sunroof working better, only about 8" of opening so far. Regards, Don |

The YA will go nicely in your garage with the TC and TF. |

Hi Don, If there is red oil in the reservoir, it could be original fluid or most likely Auto Transmission Oil. This is around SAE5 in weight, and in my experience, easily leaks from the rams under pressure. I have found SAE20 weight motorcycle Fork Oil to work best, and it has additives that promote "seal swell" that slows the leaks on the rams over time. The Jackall system needs to be exercised a few times a year to keep it operating well. Cheers Tony |

Thanks Stuart and Tony. I put a small amount of trans fluid in and the system worked except for a small leak in one front ram, I will change to 20w oil. Does the sunroof require lubrication, if so how?
The interior is in very good condition, the leather seats need a clean only, but I will replace the window channels and door and boot rubbers. Oh, and the front and rear screen rubbers and the..... Peter V, when I get the original documents and history I will give you the details. Think of this, no more wet winters in my T types. Regards Don ![]() |

Hi Don, With regard to the sunroof, there are a number of points that could be causing it to stop. The best way to understand how it works and where the lubrication is required is to remove it & also the lining to the sunroof. I suspect the "spear" is your problem point, but it could also be the front slides, or the side timber strips - only removal & inspection will answer the question. Enjoy your dry winters !.
