MG MG Y Type - Large stash of Y-parts to be cleared quickly

In Holland a car restorer is retiring and needs to clear out his premises at rather short notice.

Over the years he amassed a large quantity of Y-parts and he wants to sell them as one job lot.

There are:
2 YA chassis, one is the ultra rare LHD, KPH examples; surely that should be saved?
1 YB chassis.
3 bodies,
several interiors,
numerous wings and doors, of which one set of doors has been welded,
etc. etc.

All this for EUR 1,750.- o.b.o.. That's less than GBP 1,300.- in real money!

I failed to convince my wife that I should save this hoard, but would hate to see it going to the crusher.

Please contact me on +31 6 13 000 778 for further details if you are serious about saving these parts.

This seems an opportunity not to be missed.
I certainly have storage space for most of the parts and could put the cars under cover during the Summer.

I would be interested but would need help from someone in the UK to help collect and return the goods to the UK.

April is difficult for me as I am heaviy involved with a Public Inquiry and will be effectively out of circulation for a fortnight. Also part of the garage will be used for temporary storage of kitchen units as we are having a new kitchen in May - I hope!

If we can sort out a way ahead with these that would be very helpful. Has anyone in the UK access to a low loader/trailer and vehicle with a draw bar? As I have no such such facilities. Anyone interested then please do contact me by e-mail: jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com

Should we be able to eventually get the goods across to the UK then I would willingly market them. I wouldn't be looking to make any big profits but sufficient to cover purchase costs, hire, travel facilities etc.

As you correctly say Willem this really is an opportunity that MUST be taken up ptherwise someone's restoration will never be complete!

So come on chaps let's see what we can do!

Willem I presume their is an end date when the owner needs to dispose of all these goods?

Sincerely

Jerry

Hi Jerry,
My car has a tow hitch. Be glad to help if I can.

Hi Bill

I think the MGCC Y Register ought to be actively involved in this by hiring a van and trailer and if we are still in time paying for a crossing. I could store most of the goods and we could then sell the parts to interested owners.

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers

Hi Jerry,

I agree, but we would need to get the committee on board first. One problem that has occurred to me, even with a large van and trailer, would there be sufficient space to do it all in one trip? Chassis we can stack, and all the loose bits would go in somewhere, but three bodies?

Cheers,

Bill.
W M (Bill) Bennett

Jerry and Bill,

Thanks for these enthusiastic replies. They will help me to sleep tonight because this morning I was rather depressed when I failed to convince my wife that this was an opportunity not to be missed.

I will contact the owner tomorrow to ask about the timeline. If push comes to shove I MAY be able to find temporary storage for the parts including the bodies, but that would involve a lot of extra time and miles (and miles cost money).

I will contact Jerry directly per email with the owners details; I'm not in it for any profit.

That sounds good Willem

I am gathering in the views of the Y Register Committee as to the approach we should take. The responses that I have recieved are very positive with the feelng that if the Y register acquired them then they should be placed on their website for sale.

The aim would be to secure rare parts and make them available to ALL Y owbers at realistic prices. I feel that this would be a worthwhile and non-profit way of using our members resources to purchase the stock with the sales being used to offset the outlay. Perhaps we might use any balance (should there be any) to perhaps consider the remanufacture of difficult to obtain parts. Though not those which involve any safety related parts as the MGCC does not allow its Registers to undertake these activities.

If we ae able to undertake this the sensible way forward would be for us to hire a 10-15 m length container, have it filled up and the shipped back to the UK.If the Regsiter are okay with this then I'll follow it up.

All the best

Remember when you import all of these back into the UK you will need to pay Duty and VAT on them unless the sale already includes VAT from the export country with a valid VAT number and date on the Invoice with the amount in € and the rate that was paid. In this case the VAT would be waived but the Import Duty would remain at about 5% or so of the value of the sale.

As far as I am aware there is no import guty for goods between EU member states of which the UK is a member (at least for now).

Not only do you not have to pay import duty. You do not have to pay VAT on secondhand parts sold between private parties ie not a commercial transaction.

The original thread mentioned that the guy was a car restorer so that implies a business that would at least meet the threshold for VAT registration. Accordingly if he sells business assets as a private transaction that would be VAT evasion and possibly Income Tax evasion too so I would tread carefully by going down the private transaction between two individuals route Chris as the MGCC and the MGCC Y could be deemed duplicit in any prosecution if followed through on by the VAT and Income Tax people in the Netherlands and in the UK. Just a suggestion ...

I was self employed and VAT registered for many years until my retirement 3 years ago.

If the seller of the parts is (still) VAT registered - I do not know the turnover threshold for VAt in the Netherlands - he should account for any VAT on sales in his regular returns to the Dutch authorities. This does not mean that VAT will necessarily be added to the price of the parts; this could be deemed to be included in the agreed price and calculated for VAT purposes as a fraction of the total.

The responsibility for declaring VAT and income for tax purposes is entirely due to the seller and his conscience. There is no question of a purchaser having any duty to the tax authorities and he cannot be held to account in any way for the failure of the seller to account for the transaction to the relevant tax authorities. If he can show a loss on the original cost of the parts, he may even be due a refund!

Today Paul Grafham 'the brave' and his wife Maggie collected the Y-parts in Holland.

Amazingly we succeeded to load all the parts in one go. I do hope the return journey is uneventful and wish Paul and Maggie all the best with unloading and sorting of the parts.

Thanks to all concerned in saving this huge pile of Y-parts.

Well done Paul & Willem. That MG sign alone is worth big bucks!
Paul Barrow

Yes well done Willem. Paul and Maggie.

It may interest subscribers to know that Paul and Maggie Grafham formed the first MGCC Y Type Register in 1979 (Something that I was unaware of until earlier this year).
They were fed up with Y Types being scrapped for their spares - principally engines and front suspension for TD's, TF's and later MGA's and B's. Though it was more T Type owners who undertook this monstrous disregard for the Y model.

They kept the Regsiter going for 2-3 years before business committments took over and the Y Register morphed into the T Type Register. Then of course Dennis Doubtfire and a couple of more keen Y owners helped l by the late David Pelham formed the MGCC Y Register in 1992.

Paul and Maggie will be our special guests at the Y Register Spring Weekend over the weekend of 9th/10th May centred in Stone Satffordshire.

We look forward to hearing about Paul and Maggie's exploits in rescuing these valaable parts.

Love the MG sign!

All the best

Jerry

This where they came from; it wasn't the only sign...

Well, despite being searched at UK Customs for explosives and then radioactive material, we made it back home in one piece.

Our thanks to Jan and his family for their hospitality and help.

In due course when we have catalogued what we have bought, we will be in touch and take things from there.

Paul & Maggie.
