MG MG Y Type - Master Cylinder

I have recently become the happy owner of an MG Y Tourer. She was apparently #3 of the body style as she appears to be listed in Y 's on parade. I do have a significant problem with the master cylinder that has a broken piston. Where could I find this part. I have checked Moss and Abingdon to no avail.

Hi Art

Sadly neither Moss Motors nor Abingdon Spares really know Ys.

The YA and YT used a different master cylinder to the TC and TD. The TD one is the same as the YB though.

Your best bet would be to contact Paul at NTG Motor Services in the UK (011 44 1473 406031 including international access dial code from the US)and ask them if they can assist. In their list they do show part number K189PX for the entire Master Cylinder.

I will email you off line so you can send me some more details and a photo and I will see if your piston can be repaired.

It is also worth trying Wiel Claessens at C&C Parts in the Netherlands. (All of Wiel's team speak English). C&C manufacture both wheel cylinders and master cylinders for the YA and YT.

Under Dutch Law you must be able to see the brake fluid level under the bonnet so C&C also produce YA/YT brake master cylinders which connect to a brake fluid reservoir that can be fitted under the bonnet. It s also possible that C&C have old (original) master cylinders available. There is a link to the website from the Y Register website or you can go direct http://www.ccparts.nl

As a 2nd request can you mail me off the Bulletin Board and let me know which YT you have recently acquired so I can update my Factory List. (this can be found on the www.mgytypes.org website

Good Luck

I got a new TC master from Abingdon Spares, which came from the Netherlands. It was a beautiful piece of work, but the pressure would not release and the brakes would lock up.
It came fitted with a flat washer instead of a convex spring washer at the inboard end of the piston and I had to replace it with the correct washer.

Yes, NTG do (or did recently) have stocks of master cylinders. I bought one a few months ago to complete overhaul of YB braking system after years of disuse. It and the brakes now work fine.

The master cylinder for the YB is the same as the TD which is fairly easily available. The YA/YT is a different beastie.

I would strongly suggest C&C per David Pelham's note above as I have heard good things about them. Good to talk with you today too, thanks for calling me.

I have found a picture of the 'Dutch' modified Master Cylinder from my archives. The reservoir is located on (or in) the Battery Box. Please see attached:

I have been toying with a remote reserve for my TD MKII for some time. It is a real pain to get to it and open it, not to mention a concern about grit and such getting into the master, when we have to show the fluid to a tech inspector at the races. A suggestion I once received was to get a Jag master-cylinder filler cap (which has a pipe fitting and supposedly will fit right up) and fit it to the master, allowing you to pipe the fluid from a firewall supply. am i being mislead, as I new got around to chasing down a Jag cap. Don't recall which model, XK or E series. Could be a whole lot less expensive than any other solution and completely reversable.

Are you the lucky guy ... or what? If you haven't already got sorted out on this drop me an email as I have located in the back of my stores, the necessary piston you require! Amazing what you find when you aren't looking for it!

YA / YT brake M/ Cyl advertised by NTG as having reservoir that sits in battery box and is same look as the one from C&C.

Have any YA / YT owners not in Holland gone down this route?

Are C&C still trading? Someone told me they thought they might not be now, I wondered if this true, would be extremely sad if it were true.

C&C are still in business - http://www.ccparts.nl/home_eng.htm and still happy to work on MG Y/YT and YB master cylinders as far as I am aware.

If anyone needs a YA/YT Master Cylinder I have a couple of spares - re-built ready to go, or rusty and ready for re-build, make your choice.
