Interesting admission posted by MGCC quoting “The knowledge of Ys is woefully inadequate in the MGCC....”
Good support for their own club from Y Register, can’t criticise their complete honesty though. Shame post continues to knock those at Brooklands who maybe were Marshall’s not up to speed with every make model of MG, post digs at a mistaking a Y Type for Magnette.

Richard, if the Marshalls were not up to speed they must have been temporary agency staff. Anyone there in 2017 would have seen an impressive Y-Type line up.

Robert,

Last years MG Era day was a superb showing of Y's it wasn't far short of the number's at the MG Car Club's Spring Run event.
Your comment about marshalls is spot on, for big events they would hire them in, so unlikely to be clued up on models of MG's.

Robert, must catch up soon with the other Y's locally, I'm off in May to Cumbria in one of my Y's, to give it a full length trip from South to North and back hopeful to clock up few miles.

As I was the individual who posted a response to the fine picture of Neil Cairns with his YB at Brooklands, after he had been told by the Stewards to park his car along with the other Magnettes, it might be wise to clarify Richard's comment on the capabilities of the Marshall's at Brooklands. I made this as I had inadvertently assumed that it was organised by the MG Car Club. I was wrong and for that I must apologise!

Nonetheless, the knowledge of Y's amongst not only the MGCC (other than the Y Register) but also the Owners Club and the majority of MG owners who own an MGB or younger is that they are very much unaware of the Y.

In July/August 2017 we attended the Swiss V8 Register Lisbon Tour organised by Victor Rodgrigues, a long term Y owner. This was prior to attending the MG Event of the Year in Porto a week or so later. I was surprised how many of the V8 owners, most of whom were from the UK were totally unaware that MG made a post war tourer and a disturbing few had no idea about the Y Type in general.

All of which bears out my assertion that the knowledge of Y's in the MGCC is indeed woefully inadequate!

When I attended both the Classic Car Show in November and the Practical Classics Restoration Show at the NEC with the YT it was fascinating to find out how many folk had not heard of the Y. Though in fairness both events are not MG specific.

I sense that it is one of those issues where there will always be a lack of awareness. Although Clubs could do better.

Jerry,

Nice response, I for one admire your straight talking and by far you stand head shoulders above your fellow committee members who never see fault in the club, blindly argue when in the wrong even after the obvious is pointed out and they still argue.

The register missed an opportunity not to appoint you as it's Chairman at the last change, it cries out for someone with your vision to take on the roll. Maybe next time you will consider standing and changing the direction of the register and having a stronger influence in the club. The last edition of Safety Fast was interesting comment by the chairman, and nice to read his comments on racing and his personal view that all members should be represented and he disagreed with the view that without racing then there is no point in the MGCC, I like it.

Jerry, one thing that is nice about a Y Type surely is that it is slightly less well known car. I for one like to keep it that way.

The fact that the Y-Type is pre-war designed but post war built, does give it an air of mystery. How many have been asked, at an all marques car show: "What year is it?" But the lack of awareness is not unique to MG.

WW2 got in the way of many a marque's production. So, brownie points if you can name this beauty. Additional points for the year, model and engine size.

Robert,

MG SA? 2 Litre 1936? is my guess, hard to tell as picture is fairly small!!

Richard

I think it's a SS Jaguar 2 & half litre, 1937

Thank you for your comments. I though had and continue to have no wish to be Chair!

I could not give the role the committment that it needs which both Peter did and Chris does.

I am on both the Y Register and Octagon Committees and am also an Owners Club member. My remit with the Octagpn is to work with the other MG Clubs and to promote the Y Type. In this respect I have got to know a number of folk in all three clubs and there are some good people in each.

I enjoy the company of the Octobods and know several of the Owners Club personnel. They all are very keen to help to.promote the Y. Likewisd Ian Quarrington the Chairman of the Car Club is very helpful.

Articles on Ys are always welcome and all three did some excellebt coverage during the 70th Year celebrations abd that did involve all three clubs working together.

Its about cooperation and although.I do get highly frustrated by some of the actions of the MGCC in particular inevitably its better to work with all of them rather than to try and divide and rule.

Life is too short Richard. If you are fortunste enough to be able to enjoy yourself then take the opportunity is my motto. Above all do it now and not plan a few years ahead.. as I mention to.a few folk who chat about their planned restoration project (which they have been 'planning' for years!

Cheers

Wrong marque Richard, but Terry was closer. It's a 1947 Jaguar Mk4, the small version with the one and three quarter litre engine.

Jerry, I have to agree, if you have the nous to restore your car, then get on with it. If however, you can't tell a spanner from a wrench, then buy someone else's restoration, because you will never recover the cost if it's done by a professional. Not unless you are lucky enough to have something like a pre-war Bentley, or an American Deusenberg.
