MG MG Y Type - MG TC Crown Wheel & Pinion
Dear all Does anyone know for sure, if a TC's CW&P would fit a YT/YA differential? Preferable without any modification .... Thank you Anton |

Anton, I am fairly sure that a TC cwp will fit ya diff but the person to ask is Roger Furneaux who runs Madmetrics in Devon and repairs our diffs. He can be contacted on roger.46tc@gmail.com or post your question on the t-abc list if you have access to it. Otherwise just ask and I will ask the question for you. Ian Thomson |

Thank you Ian I'll follow up (not too soon) and keep you posted. Anton |

Hi Anton,
I threw out a couple of old Y/Morris 10 diffs about six months ago, so can not exactly compare for you. However, I have just measured a couple of old TC pinions and they are about 179 mm in length. The diameter of the TC crown-wheel is about the same OD measurement, at about 178 mm. That might help answer the question? From memory, the crown-wheels were the same but maybe the Y pinion was different ... a bit shorter? I think I figured that the carriers were the same except the TC had the "pull" female-hex-nut adjustment threaded on the carrier, while the Y had the "push" male-threaded-plug adjustment threaded in the main casting. (Same thrust bearings but the opposite way round.) Sorry that some of this is only from memory, but the measurements given might answer the question. Cheers from South Australia, Bob Schapel |

Hello Bob Thank you for your trouble. Pitty you threw out the Y/Morris diffs :o) Roger Furneaux set me a mail today, confirming that the CW&P of the YA/YT is the same dimensionally as the TA/TB/TC but of course the ratios are different. He also mentioned that he has different ratios. I 'll have to sort out things and will keep you posted.... cheers Anton |

Hi Bob I checked my YT's CW&P and got different measurements regarding your TC ones. It's getting interesting... CrownWheel: approx. 167.5mm outside diameter Pinion: approx. 173mm overall length I wonder what Roger Furneaux (of MadMetrics) input will be Anton ![]() ![]() |

Hello Ian Thomson Could you please let me have Roger Furneaux' (Madmetrics) telephone number? We had e-mailed, but all of a sudden there are no more replies.... Thank you in advance Anton |
Anton Piller |
Gentlemen After long last, I managed to speak to roger over the telephone and send him pictures by mail. Initially,I had used an incomplete phone number and an e-mail address that had been changed some two years ago. For those of you who are intersted in this topic, I attach two detail-photos of the CrownWheel that I mailed to Roger and (by follow-up mail) will send two pictures of the pinion, that Roger also got. Cheers from Switzerland Anton ![]() ![]() |

Friends Here is Roger Fourneaux' reply. He seems to be very knowledgeable and I like his offer of sending me a trial CW&P. But at present, I am a bit hesitant to start playing with the diff - too many "unknowns"! What you think? Anton ![]() |
