MG MG Y Type - MG Y Type Starting Handle
Hi Guys
A starting handle came with the YT when I purchased the car last year. Yesterday, I went to use it to turn the motor over so I could adjust the tappets, but it was too short. (Tappets have been adjusted, removed spark plugs and raised one rear wheel off ground and turn that to turn motor over- car in 4th gear) Can someone please provide the three (3) lengths, so I can look at making one or know what to buy. For the long length and handle, measure between the inside bend to end. Thank you Stuart |

Hi Stuart, have attached a drawing showing the measurements. Note that the end of the shaft has a reduced diameter, if you need a picture of the starter handle you can find one on this site. Just click on News at the left side of the home page and another panel will open up. Scroll down to the very bottom and click on Terry Ciantars original Toolkit to view the picture. Let me know if you need further details. Regards Terry Y2866 ![]() |

Stuart, I forgot to mention that this is a crank from a Y a. I am assuming it will be the same as a YT Terry |

Yes it is the same across all Ys. The handle should have a brass swivel sleeve handle too. Stuart, if you scroll down the NEWS page you will find many items in the side bar of the News page, one of which is a page called The MG Y Type Toolkit which can also be accessed direct via the URL http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/toolkit1.shtml and the follow on page http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/toolkit2.shtml. There are various pictures there that will help you ensure you get the correct MG Y design. They do come up on eBay ... intermittently and are not cheap for a genuine one (which may account for why you have an oddball one)! Paul |

Terry and Paul Thank you for your replies. I had already been through the IMGYTR website and LTBYs CD looking for the dimensions, only finding photos of original tools. I know NTG sell them, but the cost of frieght from UK would be prohibitive due to the handles size. According to NTG site, the same handle was used on the TDs, TFs, 4/44s and 15/50s. I will keep an eye out for one. Stuart |

Hi John Short of buying either a good second hand one complete or a NOS one from NTG you are out of luck my friend as they are not available as a separate part. Paul |

John/Paul, you can buy new starting handles for YA/YB/YT from the MG Octagon Car Club, part number SBE078A members price £49-50, non-members £54-45. Regards, Brian |
