MG MG Y Type - MG YA Restoration Help

We have owned a 1950 YA since 1979ish and since approx. 1985 it has been in a shed neglected and we have always dreamed of getting it restored. That day is now approaching and we are seeking any advice from other MGYA enthusiasts as to where to start. We would have to send it for restoration as have not got time to do ourselves. So basically would be grateful for any recommendations and rough estimates of what it may cost. (I will find out some photos and details and post on Ys on parade)

Hi Lindsey,

It is pretty much accepted that a total restoration on a YA with the work carried out by others will cost you more than the car will ever be worth.

You can easily spend more than £5000 on trim and chrome plating.

A gradual 'rolling restoration' would be the best way to go but that is really dependent upon what you are starting with.

Is yours a runner....

Hi Lindsey, If I can be of help please contact me. My wife and I originally set up the Y register of the MG car Club back in the 1970s ( despite what others may claim) facilitating the break from the T Register. At that time John Lawson met us and sourced much of the information for the book he was writing at the time on Y Types. I am happy to come and look at your Y and give an opinion on what will need doing but as previously said elsewhere taking it to a restorer especially one who is not familiar can be costly not just financially. Originalty is extremely important.I alive in Hereford. Paul

Hi Lindsey

As you can see, we MG Y Type owners are a friendly bunch and want to help. Before I moved to the USA I used to live in Awbridge, Hampshire. Clearly the resources of the website (www.mgytypes.org) are fully and freely available to you and you are welcome to contact us at any time with any question and we will be delighted to help you in whatever way we can. Whatever your question, I am confident that I can find someone who will know the answer ... if there is a known answer!! If there is no known answer then we have the resources to find the answer too probably! We have helped many people like yourselves in the past and hope to help you.

We all look forward to helping you get the maximum enjoyment out of your car and sincerely wish you the very best in the forth-coming adventure you are about to embark on. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

Best wishes,

Lindsey, I have just had a complete interior refit on my ya this included new head linning, new carpets, rear seat and 2 front seats recovered, new door cards, doors recovered, back shelf, and new pillar cards all recovered in leather, and new seat springs,, cost me £3750. and the chap who did it has made a first class job of it. believe me it has not been done with cheap materials,,it was a Nottingham firm who did the job I did have estimates in excess of £10.000 it does pay to shop around,, but try to use a firm that one of the y,ers have used and have vouched for,, that way it cuts out the cowboys, if ever you need his address I am happy to give it to you, any way all the best and I hope you complete your dream DON.

Lindsey, drop me a note and I will be happy to put you in touch with Richard Knight (fellow MG Y owner and Hampshire resident) who has recently completed a very thorough rebuild and respray of his YB to a very high standard so he will be more than able to assist you with good, reasonably priced vendors local to you.

A quick note to say Thank You for all replies so far. Lots to think about already. There is obviously a wealth of expertise and good advice available which is much appreciated. Have been looking for our MG YA file which has been put in a safe place but all I have for sure is that it was registered on 5th April 1950. Hopefully by the weekend will locate it and provide some more details.
