MG MG Y Type - missing door locks
Greetings all you YT-professionals Can anyone of you tell me, wether the locking mechanism of YA saloon doors would fit a YT as well? My YT is short of locks and obviestly it would be easier to hunt for YA locks, than to look for YT locks. Thank you and best regards. Anton |

The YT never had doors which could be locked. I think that on the YA/YB only the drivers door could be locked from the outside. The handles are the same design but I have no idea whether the actual locking mechanism is interchangeable. Terry |

Anton Even if you lock the door latch what have you really locked on a YT? Larry 49 YT |

They have a point. Even on a YA they really are not much use - a minor deterent at best, however on an open top, about "as much use as a chocolate firegaurd" as we say in the UK. I never bother locking my MGB roadster even though it has locks, and even when the roof is up. I am not sure but even the MGA did not have lock on the doors Anton. Best wishes Paul |

My B hasn't been locked in 20 years. THe last time the doors were locked was when my father owned the car and it only lead to someone slicing open the top to reach in and steal something. I do lock my YB but only to keep the neighborhood kids from becomming too curious when I leave the car in the driveway. |

Steve Get a German Sheperd dog - good for keeping them out of the yard altogether, and great company too! Paul |

I already have a Rotweiler but he's just an oversized lapdog. The biggest threat from him is being licked to death. |

Yeah, but don't let all our secrets out - I have the same problem! Paul |

Hi all you nice guys Sorry, about only being able to reply today - I was away on a short (business) trip. By the way, I am the proud owner of a female Doberman (also the licking type). Probably my request was a bit confusing insofar, that I asked for "locks". Of corse; I would never "lock" a convertible car, but I would at least want to close the doors. I have neither the handles nor the mechanisms. Given the fact, that the YT's are suicide doors, I think I should look for some ways to be able to put the car around corners. Thank you all Anton |
Anton Piller |
I'm suprised no cars with suicide doors ever came with a safety locking mechanism. If the single latch fails, the door flies open and the passenger falls out. I know this from experience. Well, the door part not the falling out part. |
Steve Simmons |
Steve If you look at the latch plate in the door jamb you should see a small spring loaded "wedge" that latches the door before it fully closes. It isn't truely a safety latch but it does provide a secondary backup. FWIW Larry |
Larry Hallanger |
Isn't that part of the same mechanism? When my latch failed, the wedge mechanism broke in two leaving nothing for hte door to hold onto. |

Anton: I would start with NTG. They might have used handles and locking mechanisms, strikers etc. They may also know whether they are interchangeable from a Y saloon to a YT. Then I would look at Paul Beck Vintage Car Supplies and the Complete Automobilist. Both have web sites and have a variety of interior and exterior handles etc which may be suitable. Terry |

Thank's to all of you, about your comments. My special thanks go to Terry, for realizing, that I have no locks at all! I will get in touch with NTG and "Paul Beck Vintage Car Supplies" as well as the "Complete Automobilist". Anton |
