MG MG Y Type - Neophyte seeks buyer advice
Gentlemen (Ladies?), Just wondering if any of you can offer any buying advices specific to Y types (a saloon YB is being considered seriously). I know MGs fairly well, and I currently have a ZB Magnette. Have had many Bs, As, and I'm familiar with T types - so I know the drive train of the Y to some extent. I'm told outside the obvious vintage car maladies - to watch carefully the chassis outriggers, main members (particularly to the rear) - and the boot floor/spare wheel floors in particular. Anything I'm being completely naive about? Anyone want to buy a quality (California car all it's life) ZB with a three-main "1800" B series, MGA Diff., brand new wire wheels and a thorough nut and bolt restoration thus far? Thanks in advance... Cheers, Tom |

There should be a guide such as this on the 'Y' Type web site, because I wrote it along with David Pelham. The site is < www.mgytypes.org.uk >, or go to the fullclub list and there is a contact there. Neil. |

I too was looking for some advice on buying a Y, but couldn't find anything on the site. However I can personally recommend some of Neil's (Cairns) booklets on this subject. |

Thankyou for the advert Andrew. If you are in the USA BRITBOOKS keep them. Neil. |

Watch the chassis legs themselves where they dip down under the axle. Oil leaks keep the front rust free but the rear can be a problem if the drain holes are blocked. Ian Thomson. |

It's coming soon - we have been working on probably the most comprehensive buying guide ever. Sorry to those for whom it will be too late, however, there is always Let there be Ys by David Lawrence. While this book does not specifically have a Buyer's Guide, it does run through some common problems. We hope to have a section on the Engine and Transmission as well as the Chassis, Body, Electrics, indeed the lot. We also want it to encapsulate YTs too. As you can appreciate, this is a tall order, but Neil Cairns and David Pelham have risen to it and we hope to have it soon. Hang in there! Paul Barrow Webmaster http://www.mgytypes.org |
