MG MG Y Type - NEW head lamp brackets
Hi all, On 18th May 2010, I posted the following unique opportunity for Y owners; "I am in the throws of obtaining a quotation to have some new brackets made for my cars. The originals were of "mazac/monkey metal" which pitted very badly and does not re-chrome very well. Unless I find another suitable material, these new ones will be brass and made to a very high standard with a chromium plate finish. As cost will be dependent upon volume, it would be helpful to know if other owners would be interested in buying these to smarten up their car. Do any other cars apart from the MGY use these? I am a private individual/owner[YB0321] (not a business) and would look to sell at cost plus a small margin to cover my expenses etc. The ballpark figure at the moment is approx £65 each. If you think you would be interested, please send me a short email with, "Y Brackets", in the subject line. This would be totally without any obligation at this stage. Many thanks." The reason for this second post is to say that the response todate has been negligible,(thanks to those who have said they are interested) despite the fact that at the Y Spring Run here in UK, I counted 12 cars with rather sad looking "brackets". Perhaps in these stretched economic times the price looks high, but all I can say is that NTG have one pair left in stock at approx £120 EACH!! I shall leave the offer open until the end of June and if sufficient numbers are not forthcoming, I shall abandon the project. The matter is in your hands. Here's hoping. Keith |

Just for clarification I have attached a picture to show that it is the bracket that connects the wing to the heahlamp through bar and on which is bolted the headlamp itself. These are of course "handed" The picture is an OLD bracket and NOT the new ones to be made. You will notice on this OLD bracket that the boltholes have been drilled through. The new ones will have the correct "blind tappings" as original. I am also exploring the supply of the oval shaped reinforcing plate that is fixed on the under side of the wing to strengthen the fixing point. Rust normally takes its toll of these bits of metal.New ones will probably be stainless steel. Keith ![]() |

Hi Keith Yes please - mark me up for a set. This is a great addition to the remake of the lost bits that always corrode/pit and make a car look bad despite everything else. Paul |

Hi Keith, as already stated by mail please have me on your list for a pair of these headlamp brackets! Manfred |
M. G. Schulz |
Hello Manfred, Yes, you are on my list and I will advise you and any others as soon as I have enough orders to proceed and obtain a firm price. Thank you for your support. Keith |
Keith D Herkes |
Hi Keith Yes I would be interested in a pair of head lamp brackets for my MG YB 0988, I was also at the Spring Run but with a Red MGA - enjoyed a very good day out. Regards Keith Harris |

Keith I am interested since the pair on my YA are on the point of disintegration Thanks Bryan Mellem |

Hi Keith and Bryan. Interest duly noted and thank you for your support of this project. Perhaps you would email me of BBS so that I have your contact details on file. The numbers are building slowly, but not enough yet to make it financially viable at a reasonable cost. In case I am chasing a non existent over-seas market, does anyone know if these have been re-manufactured outside UK? What about in Australia? Thanks, Keith |
Keith D Herkes |
Keith, I am also interested in a pair of these for my YA. (I'm assuming they are the same for both the YA & YB's) Regards, Tony Knowles |
A.B. Knowles |
They are the same on YA/YT and YB Tony so no problems there. Paul |
Paul Barrow |
Keith I am interested also. Will send you my contact information directly. Thanks Larry Hallanger |

Tony, Many thanks for your support. Please let me have your contact details off BBS. Larry, Thanks also for your enquiry. I have replied off BBS. Regards. Keith |

Keith, I would be interested in a pair of brackets too. There are probably only a dozen owners in Australia who would care to have "new" brackets on their Concours cars. I have seen a pair of "new" brackets in Australia that were completely fabricated in brass by hand by the cars owner to replace pitted & broken original brackets. They looked absolutely stunning after they were chrome plated and will still be around in 500 years. But they must have taken a lot of manhours to build. The local firm here who makes the Y-Type boot hinges in Stainless Steel expressed an interest in making headlight brackets as well, but I never followed them up on it. Will your brackets be chromed or stainles steel finish ?. cheers Tony |
A Slattery |
Hi Tony, Have included you on my list for a pair. Will let you have more details when available. Thanks for the rest of information. Hopefully most of those Y owners will read this BBS and sieze the opportunity. The proposal at the moment is to have these cast in Brass and then Chrome plated. Coincidentally, I have also been talking to "my man" about boot hinges in brass and chrome plated. Did not realise that you had a chap out there who had made some in Stainless. I presume these were machined rather than cast. Would be interestd to know the details.Email me off BBS please. Regards. Keith |

Keith, I purchased the oot hinges from the supplier on the links page. All Ican sa is they looked very good but were not cheap! They also expressed an interest in making other Y type parts when I spoke to them. For your information Richard |

I've expressed my interest off-BBS, too ! |

Hi All, To those discerning owners who have placed a provisional order with me for the brackets - a big thank you for your support for this project, so far. To those who may still be thinking about it, make up your minds and let me know asap. I hope to be finalising the details next week and will then have a definitive price, shipping costs and will seek confirmation of your orders to proceed. Keith |
Keith D Herkes |
Hi All, The project is progressing, but like many things in life, does not run exactly as expected. Extra time has been taken to ensure that the end product will be best value for money and of a high standard - hence some delays. When I return from vacation in just over 2 weeks time, I shall send out final details to all those who have expressed an interest. In the meantime, further orders will be accepted and acknowledged when I return. Thanks for your patience. Keith |
Keith D Herkes |
YES PLEASE!!! put me down for a pair for Y4002 Best regards David |
D. P. Jones |
I too am interested in a pair of headlamp brackets, please. I don't know who your potential supplier is - through Ebay, I recently purchased some very nicely reproduced boot hinges from Richard Luckman (trading as Classic Chrome Solutions) whose web address is www.classicchromesolutions.co.uk Phone 07710 082882. If he's not your potential supplier, then Richard may also be interested in quoting - he's keen to remanufacture parts for classic cars. I look forward to further information in due course. Neil |
N Wakeman |
I would be interested as well. I could also use the grommets/washers as well as you pictured above. Good luck and let me know when ready. Thanks, Dan |
J D Brown |
Since returning from holiday, the project has stalled owing to a family health problem. Should be back on track shortly and I will contact all those who have expressed an interest, to finalise order details. Once again, thanks for your patience. Reference Neil Wakeman's post above, Richard Luckman is not my source on this particular project, but we have been in ealier contact. Keith |
Keith D Herkes |
Hi Keith Thank you for keeping us all up to date and I am sure everyone would agree that your family comes first and we are all hope for a swift and good outcome. Take as long as it takes. Kind regards and best wishes, Paul on behalf of The International MG Y Type community. |

Hi all. It's a good job us car guys are patient folk. I'm afraid there is a further delay as my source is investigating an alternative casting supplier to ensure we can keep the price at an acceptable level. I hope to have an update sometime next week. Hang in there, as I'm sure it will be worth it in the end. Many thanks. Keith |
Keith D Herkes |
Hi All, At long last I am getting somewhere with the manufacturer of these head lamp brackets. I hope to have agreed a final specification, quality finish and price by the end of next week. There is also the possibility of a slight price reduction. As soon as I have the final details, I will email each person who has placed a provisional order and set out my requirements for the order to proceed. Thank you for your patience. |
Keith D Herkes |
Hi Keith Please put me down for a pair. Sincerely Jerry |

I found these 2 postings on Ebay relating to reproduction brackets and hinges: http://cgi.ebay.com/MG-YA-Headlamp-Brackets-New-Made-Brass-/290497173268?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43a2fb1714 http://cgi.ebay.com/MG-YA-Boot-Hinges-New-Made-Brass-/290497174932?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43a2fb1d94 |

Giles, Thank you for highlighting these two listings on ebay. I know the gentleman who is producing these, having discussed my project with him, but he is NOT my supplier for the head lamp brackets. It is a free market, but if any owner who has ordered from me decides to change supplier, I trust that they will advise me accordingly to amend my records. Thanks. |
Keith D Herkes |
Kieth, Could you put me down on your list for a pair of headlamp brackets. Regards Chris Pick e mail at chrispick@hotmail.co.uk |

Chris, On the list, many thanks. Keith |

Just spoken to Richard Luckman of Classic Chrome Solutions on 07710 082882 and he is offering the Headlight Brackets at £130 per set and the Boot hinges at £105 per set, he is also now going to make the Bonnet catches, but does not have a price for these yet, they will be ready in the new year. |
G.R Cotter |
Hi Gordon, Perhaps I might refer you to earlier postings here on 19th July and 12th November and therefore ask the purpose of your posting. I have recently written to all the Y Owners who have already ordered head lamp brackets from me, to advise that these will be available in January 2011 and that the price will now be appreciably below Mr Luckman's. When I approached him earlier in the year, as my possible supplier, he stated that he could not even produce the brackets for £130 per pair, yet this is what he is now selling them at. The other projects I have in hand are Bonnet Catches and Boot Hinges. I hope this clarifies matters. Keith PS as an example of the quality of my supplier's work, I attach a photo' of bonnet catches I had made earlier this year for M.G.18/80s ![]() |

Hi Kieth, Please add my name to your list for a pair of headlamp brackets. Yours sincerely Robin Lowery |
R. J. Lowery |
Hi Robin, You are welcome to join the list. I hope to have some news shortly re progress! Please drop me a line by email so that I have it on file and country of residence. Many thanks. Thank you to all who have ordered, for your continuing patience. Keith |
