MG MG Y Type - New Tyres.

I am going to replace the tyres on my 1953 YB, its currently running on 175 SR x 15 ZX. (very old).
The advice I am looking for is:
What is the best size tyre for this car, and what manufactures stock them.
V Rich

Look up Longstone tyres. They have the listing. Good to deal with.

Consider going back to cross ply/bias ply. Get the genuine feel of the 1950s car!

I see few people have aswered your query V. Unfortunately I will have to answer by stating that the "best" tyre for you car is inevitably only the opinion of the answerer so all I can really add is that in my opinion radials give a better ride than crossplies. The question of originality is up to you but I run 165X15 radials with 155X15 spare because it goes in the spare wheel locker easier and this suits me. I hope this helps.

I use cross plys on my YT and radials on our two offsprings TDs.

My very knowledgeable TD friend and Master Mechanic recommended (and I fitted) 165/80 R 15 radials! This tyre size also gives you the correct reading of your speedo. To my knowledge are the rim sizes of YBs and TDs identical.

The tires are made by "Vredestein" and cost 58.- Swiss Franks each. Don't forget to use new Tubes...

5.50" x 15" were the original cross ply size for MG YB Vaughan. As to ride quality - I love my Y and YT5.25" x 16".

All,

For what it may be worth I have Crossply on my YT and Radials on my YB, the YB which I have owned for longer. I am seeking to go back to original Crossply on my YB and the reasons are the steering feels much lighter compared to my YT, look wise the crossply are correct, and the gain for radials supposed to be better handling in the wet. Well I rarely use mine in the wet so what matter does it make and I also don't throw my cars around or into corners, I'd drive my modern car if in hurry and wanting to drive more aggressively than the sedate country road plodding in my YT. My YT Crossplys took me from Hampshire to Western isles of outer Hebrides and home some 1,300+ miles with no problems in July/August 2021.

My guess though it is all down to personal choice, and the age old advice drive the car in accordance to your skill, abilty matched to the handling of the car. I often read of owners wanting to upgrade their brakes etc, in my opinion what a waste of time money and effort, if you drive the car in according to the road conditions and anticipate the road around you then there is nothing wrong with the design and affectiveness of the brakes provided they are maintained and setup correctly.

Finally for what it is worth, I would also keep a diary of all the maintenance and journeys so you may look back and know when you did what maintenance or had what part replaced, for the sake of less than couple of minutes after each trip / service, it's great to know what you have done as memory soon forgets.

Best of luck with whichever option you go for.
