MG MG Y Type - Octagonal dashboard knobs
sorry, it´s me again ;-) With my VA restauration project I have got rund bakelite dashboard knobs and octagonal ones. Which one are the right? All photos I could find have the round ones, but then they must be from another MG, maybe the TF? I like them, they look nice. regards Walter |

Hi Walter, regarding to a friend who owned a VA for ages the octagonal knobs should belong to a WA. If you need more informations for the VA get in touch with me and I'll send you his adress. Regards M.G. Schulz |

Walter, Do the octagonal knobs have letters on them? If so, they are TF items, if not they could from an Y-type. I have some spare Y-type knobs if you are interested. Willem |

Hi, just noted your comments re octagonal switches. I have had two Y's and both dashboards had only round headed switches. I am about to reveneer my dash needing to strip it down. Can anyone confirm what the originals would have been on a 1951 YA? Thx. Bob |

Bob They were octagonal on a Y. Cecil Kimber wanted octagons everywhere in the Y! They look great! Paul |

Willem The octagonal knobs, as the round knobs have no letters engraved or printed. Now we have different opinions! Are there any phographical sources (books, etc.) where we could verify this? Walter |

Walter Without checking I am pretty sure all the original sales literature show octagonal switches (excepting early push starters) as does Let there be Ys and Lawson's Saloons and Tourers book. Paul |

Hi to all readers and MG Owners. In the light of the aforementioned discussion about switches, I would like to change mine to the octagon ones as I reveneer my dashboard in next few weeks. If you have any spare octagon switches in good reusable condition would you kindly email me with details. Please deal with any needs of Walter first as this was his thread by rights. Thanks for your consideration. Thoughts and prayers for our fellow MG'ers in France. Bob |

On page 138 and 139 of 'MG The Art of Abingdon' by John McLellan the VA dashboards all have round knobs. On page 121 the SA also appears to have round knobs. The 'preliminary announcement' WA catalogue shows round knobs, but the artwork is notoriously inaccurate. |

Hello again, I think we can conclude this subject. The Y-types definitely have octagonal switch knobs and also octagonal cable handles (starter and choke). Important at this knobs is the "thick foot" which covers the thickness of the clock´s dash panel. This is necessary as the switches are not bolted to the panel board directly, but to a metal sheet which lays behind it. Round MG knobs, ie. from the SVW types miss that foot and so do not fit that nicely. Thanks for your help and comments! Walter ![]() |
