MG MG Y Type - Oil filter mounting on Y6214

I did an oil change a week ago, and subsequently had a slight leak at the rear of the oil filter housing where the hold-on bolt passes through - I wonder why should I worry about that slight leak when it drips heaps more from other places! Anyway, I pulled the filter off this week-end to clean up and stop the leak. What I don't understand is how the filter works as there is only one hole that I can see for the oil to enter the filter - a cross hole in the spigot (see picture) where the hold on bolt screws into. I would have thought there should be two holes - one for incoming oil and one for the return.
Am I missing something?
Will send pics next

You could convert your oil pump/filter assembly (which by the way looks like the later YB type)to the modern throw away spin on oil canister type - I attach a photo of the two for comparison . The explanation for how the original system works is in the YB workshop manual. Wait for others to comment in case I am wrong but I think I am correct on this?.

Hello John. The pump you have is the late style pump. The other hole you were asking about is behind the flat metal plate, which comes off when you undo the spigot. The hole you see serves two purposes, one to allow the oil out of the filter and to use a bar to remove the spigot. As for a the oil leak at the rear of the canister I would suggest that you replace the seal. There are two types of canisters so check against the catalogs which one you need.

Thanks for your replies Butch, David. I've sealed the leak by a small 'O' ring on the inside held down by a flat washer behind the spring.
Is the adapter for a spin-on filter available "off the shelf" anywhere, or do I need to get it made? It might not look as original, but would be easier to change.

The spin on conversion kit is available on ebay occasionally or try Peter Edney or NTG - they are about £50 or so
