MG MG Y Type - Oil pressure gauge pipe
Once again into the fray. I have a 1/8" copper tube for a oil pressure gauge line directly from the the lower banjo for the head oil pipe. This line is leaking where it goes through the scuttle. Here is my question.... Should it have a flex line off of the engine banjo to the connector fitting then to the copper tube to the line, as done on TC and TD, or is what I have correct? Picture of the routing would be helpful. Thanks... CR |

CR, Have you checked in "Let there be Ys" pg 258? It explains that the copper pipe was cut either side of the scuttle. A thick rubber hose through the scuttle joined the 2 copper pipes. Depending on what Y model you have, will determine route of pipe etc.
I have a solid copper pipe from banjo to gauge with a rubber hose around the pipe where it goes through the scuttle on my YT, to stop scuttle rubbing on pipe. A continous pipe reduces possibility of oil leak and my set up looks like original set up. cheers Stuart |

Thank you for the information. I have a YT and the oil is leaking from under the rubber hose that goes through the scuttle. If there is a connection under there, that will make it much easier to fix. I will have to disassemble and have a look. .. CR |

You should find two bulbous ends on the pipe where it joins. Makes it quite difficult to fit the new hose connection but gives a secure joint until the rubber perishes in another 30 years or so. |

Pretty sure the rubber pipe connection through the scuttle was only ever a Y/YB thing folks. The YT should have a copper pipe all the way, through a rubber grommet where it goes through the firewall, just like it is on the TC and TD. Paul |

I disagree Paul - all the Y models had a flexible hose section where it passed through the firewall. Remember it also had to pass through the inner sound deadening panel as well. It is all described in "Let there be Y's", as mentioned by Stuart on Page 258 - 266 including the bulkhead diagrams. Cheers Tony |

LOL - my YT is straight through ... I think. Cannot remember, I will have to check. |

The oil pipe to the gauge is in two pieces. It breaks at the scuttle. Their is a compression fitting "olive" installed 5/16" from the end on both halfes to provide a "swedge" to keep the hose section secured.
I had to whittle off the hose section as it was so hard and deteriorated I could not cut it. I replaced it with a 5 mm I.D. hose that I had in my bits. The hose is rated for 50 psi , but is new so should have a burst of 150 psi. I hope it holds up. As usual I didn't stop to take pictures. I do have a picture of the original install with clamp from the parts car. I will try and post the picture. ... CR |

This line appears to be original and unmolested, showing where the engine side line ends, the rubber hose coupler, and the original, undisturbed clamp used. ... CR ![]() |

I agree, this is my YT (Red car). Ignore the balck wire next to the oil line, as this is the sender wire for a water temperature gauge under the thermostat. My early YA has an offset battery box, so the pipe goes through the firewall on the other side of the battery box. (Green car).
