MG MG Y Type - Oil Pump Suction Connection
I am presently restoring my 1949 MGYT EXU 3285 with a XPAG/TL/12975 engine. It appears to have a Type 4 oil pump with an oil filter conversion, image one. There is no connecting tubing from the sump to the pump and the flange outlet is blocked with a nut, image two. This outlet is connected to the oil pick-up assemply inside the sump. There is no other connection from the sump to the oil pump. How then is the pump receiving oil from the sump? ![]() ![]() |

From the oil pickup inside the sump, there is a pipe to side of the sump(held on to the sump by the 2 bolts you can see in your image 2)The oil then goes through a internal drilling (passageway)to a corresponding internal passageway in the block. There is no external pipe from the sump to the pump. |

Further to my comment above, when you put the sump on, you must make sure you put the gasket on the correct way.The gasket is in 2 halfs, 1 half has a corresponding hole for the oil passageway, the other half does not have a hole. If you put the wrong half on the wrong side,it blocks up the oil passageway, stopping oil from getting to the pump. |

Mr. Stewart, Thank you so much for explaning the path that the oil takes fom the sump to the filter. I immediate went to the preassembly photos and that pathway is clearly visible above the flange on the sump surface. As you mentioned I was very careful to install the gasket the correct way. Hi Ed I presume before you fitted the sump you installed the strainer inside the sump and to the side of the sump wall? It would be similar to this https://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p2449_Oil-Pick-Up-assembly-(Side).html It is essential that you also fitted a nice clean new gasket (https://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p4174_Gasket-Oil-Pick-Up.html) and that both surfaces are clean and level. Paul You presume correctly. Ed |

Good job Ed - you never can be too certain when people are doing a job and I prefer to be over cautious than assume anything. Paul |
