MG MG Y Type - Panhard Rod

Can any one explain how the Panhard rod (known, I think, in the U.S. as a sway bar) on the YA and YT works?
The setup instructions in the manual are quite clear, and on mine, the rubbers are in good order, although poly or nylon bushes could be a sound idea.

I recently fitted new tyres (Waymaster Premium, as they were the only ones available at the time) recently, and the handling is not as good as it was before on 20+ year old Avon HM tourist (cracks appearing good tread though). I suspect the wall on the new tyres is softer than previous as there is more body roll now.

Basically it just acts as a torsional tensioner to stop the chassis twisting, as far as I know, under load.

I suspect that your handling deterioration is due to the change in tires. Avon Tourist are very good but I have never heard of Waymaster.

Dave,

The rear axle is only attached to the chassis at the ends of the springs thus allowing a sideways movement of the axle by distorting the springs.

This sideways movement will be greater on vehicles with longer leaf springs.

My understanding is that the sole purpose of the 'lateral control ink' is to prevent the sideways (lateral) movement of the axle.

The rubbers are present to prevent transfer of road noise and vibration from the axle to the chassis.

Dave,

Rob's explanation is correct.

What is the exact size of your new tyres?

Panhard rod is as described by Rob.
The US "sway bar" is an anti-roll bar in the UK, and is a torsion bar connecting the L and R sides of the suspension , usually front, to reduce roll when cornering.

Surprised you have never heard of Waymaster tyres, Paul, though they may not be available in the US. They are supplied by Vintage Tyre Supplies, Longstone and others and provide a wide range of sizes including those for A and B Y's (and radials for B's).

Manufactured both in Taiwan and the UK and very reasonable I have fitted them to to the YT and also the TA that I used to own. Cheaper than Avons and Dunlops and fairly hard wearing. I say fairly as I have no idea what the anticipated mileage is likely to be on a set. Frpm recollection those on the TA did around 10-12,000 miles. Again whether that is good, average or poor I have no idea.

I'm not sure if you have Longstone Tyres on the selected tyre supplier list. Might be worth following up for our Y owners in the UK

Thanks
