MG MG Y Type - Petrol filler cap and opening
Hi All Could I ask someone to post a couple of close up photos of the inside of the filler cap and the top of the filler pipe opening . Mine is one of the stainless steel caps and the little spring fastener has broken off and the neck of the pipe has been messed with . I would like to know what shape and arrangement I am looking to achieve. Thanks a lot folks John B Y4424 |

Here you go John. These are from my very original YB but are the same as my Y and YT. Clip is pointing up at about 12 o'clock position so the lid flaps open. Paul ![]() ![]() |

Many thanks for those Paul. My filler pipe has been fiddled with on the top edge so i need more fiddling to get it back to shape. Not sure how yet because the outer ring is in the way. The cap itself appears to differ slightly . I have the large cap which the stainless steel wraps around , I have the spring and I have a cup shaped piece . You appear to have a second smaller cup as well . Where does the cork washer fit into all this ? I thought it went into the filler pipe neck but there doesn't appear to be room for it? I seem to remember seeing an exploded drawing of the cap somewhere but cant find it now ,or is that just my wishful thinking ? Many thanks as always John B |

John, Two tech tips thanks to Doug Pelton's extraordinary website From the Frame Up. These are for TC's, identical to Y Type filler caps. Thanks Rocky . I have just had a look at both links .They are for the TC I know, and it operates in the same way as the Y type but the arrangement within the cap is different to mine , which is a middle of the production run Y type. Cheers John |

Ok guys update .
Thank you to the folks who have contributed . My cap is the same as the one Paul photographed , except mine is in bits . The filler pipe on mine was butchered and meant the cork gasket would not fit in and the cup in the cap could not fit over it and seal into the cork washer which wasn't there anyway. Hence my confusion . So the filler neck has been reshaped to allow the cork washer to fit around it and to allow the cup in the cap to fit over it and seal onto the cork . Just got to make a new spring clip and bingo we are sorted . Bet I never roll it over in the future anyway....... Thanks folks until the next time . John B |
