MG MG Y Type - Petrol filler cap position
Does anyone know the correct or original positon of the petrol cap i.e. is the release clip at the 12 o,clock position or the 6 o,clock position? I have a 1950 YA Thanks Mel Fry |

General consent is that the release clip is on top, but I searched the archives on "filler cap" and found this thread, where the position is discussed: http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=13&subjectar=13&thread=2006122006580130496 |

Thanks Willem, I have placed the release clip at the top as this is the general consensus. The thread you found in the archives was helpful, in fact I know Tony Slattery, who originally started the thread quite well. Cheers Mel Fry |

Consensus! That was the word I was looking for, thanks for the subtle correction, it had been at the back of my mind ever since I pressed Enter.... |

On page 21 of my original owners handbook the clip is shown at the top. However I reversed this because if the clip for many reasons fails to hold, the fuel pipe is exposed and rain or dust can then enter, not least there is a fire risk. I personally have long given up authenticity on my YA. |

Hi Mel, Tony (if you read this), DWDV and Bryan, Although we all ought to be aware of originality, in case we get asked questions, I agree with Bryan that practicality, in my opionion and practice, will always take preference. This is now a much more realistic approach as we are driving cars 60 years old in totally different conditions to those when they were introduced. Thus the fitting of flashing indictators, in my opinion, is a must and points should not be deducted at concours events. I am also a member of the T Register. What I like about the Y Register is that every owner wants to drive their cars and not wrap them up in cotton wool and hide them away in garages as happens to many T Series cars. Rob |

Just have a look inside the filler pipe and check if the vent space is at the top - then you know which way round to put the cap - unless you un-solder and rotate it !!!! |
