MG MG Y Type - Petrol tank removal

Hi, I’ve been trying for a few days to get my petrol tank out so I can clean and reseal it, but I’m not having much luck getting it out of the hole (YB if it makes a difference?) I seem to be stuck between the filler pipe (I have already removed the neck that goes through the wing and body) and the rear attatchment bolt, I cannot seem to get enough movement to get either out, if anyone has got any top tips on how best to proceed it would be greatly appreciated!
Jake.

Hi Jake

Have you removed the plate from the floor of the boot trunk area below where the rubber connecting hose joins the filler neck to the top of the fuel tank? From memory this is held in place by four screw bolts and will have to be removed too.

Even after that, it is not easy to juggle the tank out of it's space ... even if you have a hoist to increase access. Working under the car on jack stands it is virtually impossible to get the angles you need!

As a word of caution, never work under a car on a jack, trolley (floor) jack or the Jackall System.

Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Hi Jake,
It will help if you bend the side chassis mountings clear of the tank and remove the Panhard Rod before removing the tank.

The tank should drop at the front and then move forward to clear the bolt from the rear mount.

When the cars were built, the fuel tank was already mounted in the chassis before the body was fitted (see the factory photo attached), so it's removal is tricky.

Good Luck

Hi Paul and Tony, thanks for the suggestions I will give it another go tomorrow hopefully.
I have removed everything from the tank and spare wheel floor, the remaining part of filler pipe that is part of the tank appears to be right up against the oval cut out on the floor whilst the rear mounting bolt of the tank is hard against its hole at the same time.

unfortunately I only have a floor and jack stands to carry out the work, no luxury items here!

@tony - not sure if i've missed something or misunderstood but there doesn't appear to be a panhard rod on the car, nor does it appear to be there in any of the diagrams in the workshop manual? could you shed some more light on this please?

Hi Jake,
I overlooked the fact you have a YB - they don't have a Panhard Rod.

As Paul mentioned, there should be a removable plate around the filler pipe that has the oval hole. Once this is removed, you should have a rectangular hole with rounded corners. Not easy to remove from inside the spare wheel recess. Should be retained by 4 x 1/4" BSF bolts.

Keep going

Hi Jake
I don't think they come out as the body was fitted over them. I cut a small amount off the top of the filler pipe. The rubber tube has plenty of length to compensate or you can replace with a longer one. Don't forget you have to get it back in as well.

Hi Peter, yeah I’ve decided that cutting the pipe about 1/2 inch should solve the puzzle, but that’s now a job for next winter as I got fed up of playing Tetris with the tank and so put it all back together.

Thanks for all of your insight into this matter, it is greatly appreciated.
