MG MG Y Type - Plugs and leads

Sorry for a typically mundane question from Mr Duck but please can somebody recommend spark plugs and HT leads for my YT (and where to obtain)?
The old girl is misfiring like a loon when pulling hard uphill and I figured this was the best place to start (seeing as I've never renewed either item in 13 years of ownership) and a quick look showed corrosion at the contact to the distributer cap for at least one lead.

Huge thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Saul.

Saul: Having just replaced most of the HT ignition parts on my car, with excellent results, I'd say you're doing the right thing. Best place I've used for parts is Autosparks in Nottingham (http://www.autosparks.co.uk/) who are famous for their wiring looms, but sell a wide range of components: they even do fabric-covered HT lead, which looks nicely authentic, and "Champion"-branded plug caps. Good luck with losing that misfire!

Hi Saul,

It might be good to replace the distributor points too. However, I suggest "fixing" one thing at a time so you know which item was the problem.

I hope you get it running well without too much trouble. Is that the Y Tourer I had in South Australia many years ago?

Hi Saul
The plugs that I use in my YT are NGK BP6HS. Halfords sell them, Tim's suggestion for the fabric covered leads etc of Autosparks is very sensible. Moss do them as well, though Autosparks may be their suppliers. Certainly new points, though I would suggest that perhaps you consider fitting electronic ignition.

Thanks guys.

Bob - how are you? It is indeed the same YT you had in Australia. The plugs and leads are probably the same ones you put on! Do you remember when that was? :-)

Other than a temperamental fuel pump the car hasn't skipped a beat in the last 13 years.
Considering the relative lack of attention I afford her she's been very, very good to me. My wife's the same.

Cheers,
Saul.

Saul,
I am still playing with MGs. I have a road TC and a S/C historic racing TC.
I bought the Y tourer in June 1989 and sold it in December 2000. My brother had owned the same car for four or so years from about 1966. I rebuilt the engine with new pistons and reground crank etc in 1992. Does the engine have the usual leak from the rear of the crank? I can not remember if I fitted a modern rear seal.

Saul,
How did you go sorting the misfire? Was it the plugs, leads or something else? I once had a misfire in my TC which wasn't solved with the usual methods. After lots of frustration it turned out to be some jelly-like gunk in the jet. It lay there doing nothing until the fuel flow was high (high revs or up hills) and then the fuel flow would push it up the carby needle and restrict the jet!
That Y Tourer was a great car ... reliable and fun to drive. My brother still has a Y tourer. BTW, I found my old records and they said "new crank seal front and rear".
Hope all is well,
Bob Schapel

Bob,

I haven't tackled the problem yet - been a bit busy.
However the old girl isn't running badly enough to stop me from meeting up last weekend with Chris and Hilary Hannemann during their grand European tour! Such a lovely couple.
Retirement seems to be suiting them very well indeed.
As you know Chris owned the same YT back in the early sixties a short while before your brother.
He was kind enough to give me some great pictures taken "back in the day".
It's a small MG world!!

Cheers,
Saul.
