MG MG Y Type - Pre-engaged Starter Motor for T&Y types

I noticed this add on ebay - it's for a modern pre engaged starter motor for the XPAG engine - would save wear on the ring gear. I would get one if I was not already commited to my gearbox repair!

I have no connection with the supplier but having spoken to him he assures me they will fit.

Beware! These modern starters look great but are allegedly prone to early failure and are non-repairable. Also I think I am correct in saying that if one of these pre-engaged starters is fitted, the ring gear should be turned around as the lead-edge will be on the wrong side. Has anyone got experience of fitting to a Y Type or T Type?
If you have changed over, hang onto your old starter unit, as in future you may need it to part-exchange against a rebuild unit or to have that one properly rebuilt.

Interestingly, the company indicated are unable to supply any sort of "techinical specification sheet".

You may have a point Keith - we really need anyone with personal experience of fitting one - I have been told by another company that these units are a Nippon Denso type starter that look to have had a modified drive end bracket made for a special application?

Just as an aside where is the best place (and cheapest) to get an exchange starter for a Y type? Do later starters fit?
D MULLEN

I found that the starter motor on my 54 TF will not fit my 49 YA [left hand battery box] Bryan

Dave Mullen ,please have another look at the T Type BBS.

This is probably the ble..in obvious and if so ignore it!
To answer Brian's point the starter motor for the
late YB is the same as the late TD and TF and the XPAW Engine (Wolsley)which are fitted with 8" clutch plate. The starter is a shorter length and with the difference in the flywheel size would not fit a YA or YT or early YB? Likewise the YA/YT and early YB would not fit a late YB.

I think that's correct!

David. If you have a later type of starter motor B&G were selling some very reasonably priced, one of which I had for the TF.
B Mellem

If you want a fully reconditioned starter motor(or a dynamo) on an exchange basis or an outright purchase or even your own unit rebuilt, I would recommend;
Classic & Vintage Dynamos, Shirebrook, Notts. UK 01623 747666.
Their prices are very competitative.
They are well known at all the UK shows and give a 12 month Guarantee on units.
I have no financial link with them, but have known and used them for several years.

Hey, just noticed that this post has my OLD email address, whereas my details on the membership panel show my NEW email address. Does anyone know how I correct this?
