MG MG Y Type - rack & pinion replacement

I need to replace the steering gear, or rack & pinion assembly on a YT, NTG indicates it is the same as a TD TF. I assume this is correct, unless advised other wise. Does the radiator need to be removed? What would be an expected labor charge?

Pinion I believe is shorter.?

The pinion shaft is, if I can remember about 2" longer on the TF. It may be possible to change the pinion over if its not in bad condition Bryan

According to the Nuffield Exports Repair Schedule:-

"Steering rack and pinion assembly, remove, dismantle, fit new parts as necessary, reassemble and refit (complete operation includes removing and refitting radiator and mounting member)- 5hours & 30 mins."

This was the allowance for dealers to do the work when the cars were relatively new.

You should of course allow for the age of the fasteners, the "problems" left behind by previous "mechanics" and whether you have a hoist or not.

I would allow 8 hours in any quote, as well as a few parts to replace while the radiator is out & front of engine access is easy:-

Radiator mounting Rubbers
Radiator hoses
Steady bar bushes
Steering column bushes x 3
Front engine mount
Rubber pads under headlight mounts to guards
Radiator cleanout ?

Thanks I am now looking for an inner tie rod only, I believe that part is the same as a TD, TF.

If you don't find one closer to you I can assist with this part. I have a shed full of Y-Type (mostly used) spares looking for good homes.

If you need a camshaft, I have 5 roller cam profiles, & 4 flat lifter profile cams all new.
