MG MG Y Type - radiator cap
On a Y does it use the same radiator cap as a TC or TD? If it is something exotic, where might it be available..I need a new or used one and the condition can be not so perfect..Thanks for the information..Also I was curious if some body parts are the same like the hood, etc? Thanks for any input... |

Marvin, a mod I did to my TF filler neck. I had problems with the new long neck caps seating. So, I had my radiator shop put a short modern type neck like the MGB has and use a 7 pound cap on the radiator. My car runs at a constant 85c. Mark |

Now that is really a good idea..I think mine is stock though..I guess the best way to check mine is to try a friends TD cap on mine...Thanks...Marvin |

Hello Marvin and Mark Unless I'm very much mistaken (as Murray Walker used to say commenting at Formula 1 races)you guys are comparing apples with oranges. The Y saloon and Y tourer have the same style radiator caps as TC/TDs which are octagonal and chromed screwing down onto the radiator shell. I say similar as I do not know if they are exactly the same which seems likely as the Y was made alongside the TC and then the TD production lines. A quick check with your friend' TD will tell you the answer but be careful when you try it for size not to damage the threads if it is not EXACTLY compatible The TF has a dummy one of these and has a more modern pressurised (internal spring)radiator cap which is located UNDER the bonnet. You cannot fit a more modern radiator cap to a Y saloon or tourer without a lot of new and unnecesary plumbing. With all due respect to Mark, Marvin keep searching for a Y radiator cap! Mark, did you need to go that kind of trouble to fit a new radiator cap on your TF? I would have thought replacemnents were readily available and with different spring settings too for variable pressures. |

How nice of you to tune me in regarding the radiator cap...I'll try it when my friend comes over this weekend from San Francisco..Mind you it is some 40 miles one way and this friend drives that car like you would a Tercel and never breaks down...What do you think about body parts meaning does the TA (Salon)share things like that with the TD? Or if I mash the hood am I in deep guanot?..Thanks and come visit...M |

Right as rain Rob, sorry Marvin. Rob is correct and I wasn't thinking. The rad had to come out for cleaning anyway Rob and I had tried the old cap, a new proper cap and it kept puking. The seat was bad on the neck. So instead of trying to find an original, just got a more common one. Can't tell the difference at a glance. Thanks, Mark |

Confirmation the Y series is a screw down, non-pressurized cap. The system is thermo-syphoning and the cap is the same as TA/TB/TC/TD, which is probably also the same as WA and before. Paul |

Forgot to add - it is chrome over brass and readily available from most T parts stockists - Moss Motors (& Distributors such as Shade Tree, Abingdon Spares etc. and NTG. Paul |

The Radiator Cap on the P Type is also the same. Just a word of warning if you buy a new Radiator Cap from one of the suppliers make sure that it is Brass; many of the 'New' Radiator Caps are made of steel. They obviously look the part but are much lighter. Regards. David. |

Having just bought one from NTG - mine was brass over chrome, but David is right - ask before you order. Paul |

About the bodywork: all bodywork is unique to the Y even if it based on the Morris 8 body (as is the Wolseley 8). Look for more information in Neil Cairns'article on the Y-website: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccy/sistercars.htm |
