MG MG Y Type - Rare Y-Type spotted in Italy
One of the very rare Reinholt & Christie bodied Y-Types was spotted recently in Italy. No other photos are available yet, just this one. Can anyone help to ID the car or owner ?. ![]() |

I am not knowledgeable about Y-Types! Regards David |

Wow thanks David - great to see it driving past in the first video - shame the white car stopped too early. If it had only been 1 car further on we could have enjoyed a lingering view! Got to love the little old lady in the last one - she probably wonders what the heck is going on! If you have a slow internet connection - just open up all three links at once and you can then watch them after they are loaded. This really is a good sequel to The Italian Job and almost makes me wish I was back in Europe. Thank you to the camera man who selflessly has given up driving in these cavalcades to video them. Fantastic David. Those videos are great stuff to see (did you shoot them ?). I'm sure Paul would love to link them on the International Y Website. What car did you take to the event ?. There were 3 couples in their MG's (a J3, L-Type and a TD)from our local MG club here in that event, so I will make sure they see those videos on their return. It would be great to document the story of that Y-Type with the owner - "Geneva Show Car" - amazing. Let's hope the owner records the full story for us all to share -- PLEASE Tony |

Tony I saw the Australian cars and they appear quite regularly on the videos. Search for djwmg eeoty on YouTube - there are 6 videos in total. I was actually on holiday there - just by chance of course ;-) I'm afraid she who must be obeyed decided that I was getting too old to drive the 1000 miles to the Adriatic - and back in time for Silverstone which of course was the following weekend. I'm pretty certain that owner of the Y-Type said that 1. The car was the only one with that body 2. It appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in the late 40s Incidentally, I was given to understand that the owner was female. When I looked it up on 'Interesting Ys' I thought it must have been the Beutler model, but the windscreen is wrong. But then their were more than one Ramseier Ys. And there again the detail of the side of the front wing looks wrong... David |

I think there may be 7, but I'm too old to be very good on the interweb, so I don't know how to link them to run from this post. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygiOApUGs7A at 1min.45sec. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vwhvJlu2 at 0 sec. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lepOhu4lpV0 at 6min. 0 sec. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aqa37dtvFsg at 17secs. See above. Wonderful, never too old to learn. Do nothing and the technology does it for you. Linked for your watching pleasure as our N.American cousins might say. Michael |

The Reinholt and Christe bodied Y can be seen on page 63 in Lawson's book. Cant remember off hand how many R&C's there were but I think it was like 9 Y "chassis and engine/drive train only" that went to Switzerland. Lawson covers it in his chapter. Must read it again ... but not tonight as tomorrow (nay today) will be another full day. Paul |

While Paul is sleeping I re-read Lawson, and on P61 he refers to three chassis being supplied to Mr Emil Frey for Reinbolt & Christe in early 1948. The chassis were fitted with "very distinctive two-door conertible bodywork, the three cars appearing with Dark Blue, maroon and dark green paintwork". Looking at the video again, it looks like the blue car is still around. There were a total of 9 chassis supplied by the M.G. factory in 1948, 1 each in 1952 & 1953. The 1953 chassis (the last) went to Dick Jacobs. |

"The sun never sets on the MG Y Type!" Thank you Tony for burning the lamp for us! Paul |

Tony, I'm pretty certain the Y-Type on the videos was black ... David |

Hi folks I've managed to contact the owner of the special bodied Y-Type and he tells me that "This car remains in my family since 1948. It was bodied by Ramseier, Worblaufen, and exhibited at the Geneva "salon de l'auto" (1948 or 1949)". Regards David |

Great news David, obviously my un-trained eye did not recognise it as a Ramseier. Could you contact the owner and ask if he might supply a selection of detail photos of his car for the website - similar to those that are there on the other Swiss Specials. |

Hi Tony I have emailed the owner to ask if they will be willing to contact Paul Barrow. I just have to leave it in their court! Regards David |

Hi David I look forward to hearing from the owner. This car was one of three shipped ( Y 1374, Y 1379 and Y 1318) to Ramseire Worblaufen in 1947 - see http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccy/specialys/ramseier.shtml. It would be great to establish which one of the three this is, and if possible what happened to the other two. Paul |
