MG MG Y Type - rear axle seals

Hi
i rebuild my YA
so i must rebuild the rear axle too.
a little bit leaking ...
one side has a new bearing 2rs, with seals inside
but the other one is an open bearing
so i decide to change this one too.
behind the bearing is the seal, can t see it in the moment
if i take a 2rs bearing i must not have a new seal there ? but if i need a seal there, what dimension
nothing found in the workshop manual...
FT Franz

got it off
right hand right hand thread
so turn left hand to get it off

my tool is made from a 52 mm tube 1 mm, no other tube in my garage
took two of them one cut in the middle
then mark where to make the toth
but wasn t strong enough and the tooth go outside
so i made a steel ring around it
and it works,
if i had bought it i have to wait 2 weeks
so i have some more money for the car

so solved the problem
the new bearing 6208 2rs i will get at the end of this week

one step after the other and the car will come back to the street

Hi FT,

TCs suffer from diff oil in the rear brakes too. I designed a modification in about 1982 and wrote an article in our club magazine about it in 1988. Now many TC owners use this type of seal. I have never fitted one to a Y-Type, but it might be possible, depending on the space behind the half-shaft flange. The half-shaft has to have a smooth surface for it to work, or a sleeve can be fitted over it. The advantage is that this seal keeps stops oil before it gets to the greased bearing. The old article shows a bit of tube soldered on, but now people make special nuts with the tube as part of it.

Cheers from South Australia,

Hi this is the design of the axle,
think a little bit different
i have now on both sides a bearing with seal, so the oil can t come to the brake...
the seal behind the bearing has no funktion anymore
or?

Hi FT

I had the same problem and solved it by fitting bearings that are sealed on both sides (plus the seal for safety sake).

Hi FT,
Yes the design is similar but there is less room for the modified seal device which we fit to TCs. So you are right, it would probably not work on a Y-Type.

I suggest you also use the original seal. I know race cars are different, but mine always got oily brakes until I fitted the modification. Oil seems to get through the sealed bearing AND the original seal under racing conditions.
