MG MG Y Type - Rear Bumper

Low speed impact into my rear bumper this morning.
My brakes must be better than I thought!

Question to you chaps is do I go for a repair to my pretty unhealthy looking bumper
or do I go for a new T type bumper with an adaption bracket?
As I type this I think I know what your answers will be...

Or is there a third option that I haven't thought of?

Many thanks.

Cheers,
Saul.

Hi Saul

Don't buy a TD bumper they are very different from an original YT/YA bumper as fitted to your car.

Initially try a mobile firm that specialises in removing dents where the paint isn't affected.

I had a dent in the near offside wing of my MGA which hadn't broken the paint work. I checked on line and found a few firms who provide a mobile service to knock out dents.

A guy came out and spent 45 minutes knocking out the dent and the result is stunning. All done by hand and the operators expertise. The cost £65

Whether they can do straightening of bumpers is an unknown - but if you contact them on your website you will find someone who will visit you at home to undertake the job. The firm I used was Dent Tech U.K. but the contact that I have is based in the West Midlands.

If you google dent removal on your browser you should come up with some locally based firms. You might also try a local chromer as they too will be used to knocking out dents when prepping an item for re-chroming

See how you get on

All the best

Agree with Jerry - try to keep your bumper at all costs!! If it is a low velocity impact the chances are that it wont have damaged the structure of the chassis mounts or anything but it probably will have pleated and broken the chrome so after straightening you will still have to have the bumper removed and fully rechromed. From memory there was a chromer down in Bevios Valley in Southampton. Dont know if they are still there or have become victims of the tree-huggers and EPA people in the UK but they did a fair job back in the day and may also be able to assist/advise on straightening first off if they are still there.

Hi Saul
My YB rear bumper is being straightened at the moment ready for polishing and re-chroming by RK Wadley Malvern after restoration on the same site. Past experience tells me I will get a good deal so I have not asked the price, but should know in a couple of weeks. All but small dents will cause the chrome damage on knocking out. If you are not in a hurry it could be worth a couple of trips. Combine it with a family day out on the Malverns.

I too have a similar dent in my rear bumper, created by the starting handle of a type 35 Bugatti some 40 years ago! I wear it with pride, when the bumper goes off to be rechromed this winter (original chrome getting a little tatty now) I will ask the chromer to leave the dent in! (same place as Peter Vielvoy has taken his, I'm in a queue)

I have just fitted the newly chromed Bumper to my YB.
The cost for smoothing out some dents in the bumper and re-chroming 1 over-rider and the bar was around £120. RK Wadley 01905831479. Mark is the polisher he uses a car restorer on site to straighten out the dents and has the chroming done in Birmingham. See the attached photo for excellent result.
