MG MG Y Type - Rear Springs
Hi All, Here is a pic of the rear springs from a rear axle of unknown history showing what must be some aftermarket booster springs. Anyone seen these before? Thanks, Ewan

Fairly common a few years back Ewan--Repco and places like that sold millions of them---There were and still are a few different designs ,but what you have there was a common one earlier on. willy |

Here is another example of after market spring addition. I am not to know which example is more correct , up or down. This pic is of my YT 3921 chassis , currently still working on removing rust and repairing the body , getting there. The back guards now fit perfectly. And of course it is Clipper Blue as promised, that got me into this labour of love - thank you Tony S ![]() ![]() |

CR They are exactly the same as Ewan's, only fitted upside down. Fitted like that used to be an easy way to lower a car and stiffen it up, the tighter you screwed them up the lower they'd go-,not ideal----You have no need to have them on your Y really willy |

Thanks Willy, I take it they would reduce the flex of the spring - perhaps then a harder ride. To lower the car, as per done on my car, or the other? I don’t necessarily want it lower but will leave as is for now , when I put the body on then will reassess. Thanks for your input, Clive |

Hi Clive, I have the standard springs on my YT and have found them to be perfectly satisfactory for "normal" 2 up driving. Not so sure though how the standard setup would go with 2 adults in the back and full luggage as may have been done in the day! |

Clive On your car, the helper springs would be lowering it, and the more you tighten them up the lower it will go but it'll be as stiff as because it preloads the spring To be honest with you, it's dodgey, I'd take them off-- They are supposed to be fitted underneath the spring as in Ewan's pic. where they become more loaded with weight---with your's they will get looser with weight and could actually dislodge from the spring on hitting a bump--not ideal willy |

Thanks Willy I will take your advice and do that, and even not place them on the underside. Regards Clive |

I am happy to accept the blame for another "Clipper Blue" YT on the road in Australia. I have been responsible for worse. "Tony S" The Classic Workshop Black Mountain Australia |
