MG MG Y Type - Rear window blind components?
Amongst my pieces of rear blind bits, some of which are in the attached photo, was a funny little brass roller wheel, on a holding piece with a spring inserted. Mental block - what on earth is this piece from? I know I'll feel akin to a goose, but someone put me out of my misery. John. ![]() |

Hi John, Do you have a copy of "Let there be Y's"? You will find the answers on Page 198 and Plates 28 to 31 and the associated Notes in Appendix 3. Cheers Tony The Classic Workshop |
A L SLATTERY |
Yes Tony I have checked LTBYs - it confirms what I knew about the roller blind components, all of which I have, but I'm none the wiser about the little brass spring/roller ball assembly. Anyone else seen it before any where? Otherwise it will go in my odds & sods drawer. John. |

Hi John You know I had all the parts from my car in my fingers everything was original in the car I have not had this part in my fingers 99% I think so it could be possible, but... did you take the spring out, there's an edge inside so you can put it together with another part put it in a box where you can find it when we know what it is |
FT Franz |
Hi Franz, good to hear from you. I haven't had to do as much fabrication as you, but I too have retained as many original parts, fixings etc as practicable. I don't remember taking this little sprung wheel off anything ... hence the mystery. Yes, it separates into individual parts - I'll attach a better photo. I shall certainly keep it in case its purpose occurs to anyone. It will be available to anyone if it is surplus to my requirements. Thanks for your input. John. ![]() ![]() |

It looks a bit like a cabinet door catch, I had my oven door catch off the other day and it looked scaringly similar to that, it even had the end broken off like that--- ? |

Nothing to do with the roller blind so you can toss it away. John Paul |
Paul Barrow |
Yep, I think so Paul. By the way, is there a concensus on the colour of the blind itself? I've seen "natural linen", "calico", fawn, beige ... you name it. John. |
J P Hall |
Check Let there be Ys John - I believe it was Calico material that was used because it is not a blind but defuser to defuse the brightness of headlamps following behind. Calico has those properties. Paul |
Paul Barrow |
Thanks Paul, have done, but couldn't see a reference to colour. I'll go with what I can find in Spotlight! John. |

Hi Jerry, Have a feeling that part with the spring is out of a trafficator switch not the mg one but a manual one that had a small screwed back for bulb replacement with a red window in it. It had two lugs with holes to secure to the dashboard iv'e seen on several y's after steering wheel switch has gone kaput. John YB0362 ps could find a photo if you really need it |
JC Jebb |
Hi Jerry, Just taken cover plate of switch, part is same as your picture. John YB0362 |
JC Jebb |
Photo's of front of switch and back with cover removed showing where your part is fitted. It's really only a positive locking method to keep switch in the Off/LH/RH position. JOHN YB0362 ![]() ![]() |

last call, switch is a Lucas S.D.84 |
JC Jebb |
Wow - great sleuthing, John! - yes, I have a couple of those types of switches in my odds & sods cupboard, so clearly that spring/wheel has migrated, as parts tend to do. My YA steering wheel hub is fully operational, so I'll keep the above item in a safe place in case it's useful to someone else. Thanks for taking the trouble mate. John.(Definitely not Jerry Hall!). |

Have kept a sample of original rear blind material from y3117. Looks like a linen. The second image is from where material folded showing original colour.

Rob Snell |
Perfect, thank you Rob. I'd like to get something that's a reasonable match for colour but which is also functional, as Paul describes. You've given me something to brandish as I march into a material shop near me. John. |
J P Hall |
The pictures of the linen from Rob Snell are good. It is a CALICO linen cloth! The MGCCY sell a good modern equivalent. Paul |
