MG MG Y Type - Rear window seal

Hello friends,

has somebody of you used the rear window seal offered by NT? I am not sure whether this is the ideal extrusion, the "wings" do not look very promising -- see photo.

The ideal and good tightening seal should look like my drawing at the right, I guess.
Any comments?

regards Walter

Walter Prechsl

Best advice Walter - since the rear window glass is hard if not impossible to get, take it to a VERY reputable and insured windshield glass installer and have them do it.

I have a spare glass here.

Paul -- I need no glass, just the right seal

The NTG one should be fine. What are your concerns? Does it look like the one you pulled out?

Paul
Paul Barrow

yes, the old one looks like my drawing, but the wings do not touch the body anymore (too flat).
NTGīs one have very flat wings and rounded ends too -- do they really tighten as needed?

I believe I used their seal on my back window and rear side windows when I rebuilt many moons ago. Not had an issue with it since.

Hi Walter,
Still waiting to hear from stockist of rubber channel. have you seen an original seal none of the seals made today have the same sealing properties as the original one
i enclose a rough sketch of it, as you can see
when the glass is fitted and put into the body
the body pushes the outer edge of the wing upwards making the inner go downwards against the glass making a nice water proof seal, which does not happen with the seals on the market at present. the same seal was used for the side rear windows i think. how many people
would be interested if i spoke with the people
who produced my door seal about making the correct profile window rubber??

John,

Depending on price consider me as interested. More important whilst on topic of seals, what about from windscreen seal, my one which I think was from well known Y supplier perished quite soon after purchase. Are the supplies of the front screen glass correct ones on the market?

Richard, if you find a front screen seal do let me know, please. Mine isn't leaking but it is showing a good deal of cracking. At Classics on Christchurch Quay last week a VA owner told that he thought the VA windscreen seal was interchangeable with the Y-Type, although it may need shortening a tad. I had planned to text you about it.

Are you talking about the seal for the metal surround to the body or the glass to the metal surround on the front screen?

Paul
Paul Barrow

Paul, I'm on about the one that seals the windscreen to the body, and can get curled up when re-closing the windscreen when it has been wound open, mine is cracked around corners and is quite perished.

NTG sell them http://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p5926_Seal-Windscreen-12'.html but I got my last one from there and it didn't last too long.

Modern rubber doesn't!

Hi All,
Have a look st Woolies R156,i have done three screens and all look good after a couple of years they won't outlive the originals but will still have a fair life .Still looking into rear window seal but i think it will be a nonstarter as only one person has expressed any interest you need many more than one to make it viable. will put pictue of windscreen seal on later.

Hi,
photo shows how R156 is sill upright as it should be and has not started curling after nearly 5 years not two as i first thought, how time goes without noticing it.
