MG MG Y Type - Removing engine form a YT

The engine on my YT was reconditioned in Australia some 10 years ago, but unfortunately 3 of the gudgeon pins could not have been fully torqued by bolt on the boss of the connecting rod. This resulted in a continuous knocking sound from the engine. When I dropped the sump and removed the pistons after lifting the cylinder head I found that No 4 cylinder pin was broken in half and Nos 2 & 3 were loose in the piston boss and could be moved sideways. All have left a two parallel vertical mark on the cylinder bores No 2,3 & 4. This means I need to remove the engine and get the bores machined and re-lined etc.

The MGY workshop manual suggests the headlights, radiator grill and radiator must be removed, to lift the engine/gearbox out.

Is it possible to lift the engine out on its own without removing the radiator and grill?

Many thanks

A K Koshti

Hi Anul

No sorry, no shortcuts!

Thanks Paul. I shall start the lengthy work now. Had No 4 piston size checked at the motor engineering company. It is 66.5mm which makes it standard. This means the cylinders must have been re-lined in Australia. Hopefully re-boring to +20 or +30 will remove the parallel marks and allow me to use new pistons in those sizes. The Polson pistons give no indication of size

Check out the MG Octagon Car Club when buying your new pistons etc. I think they do them in their lists. If not, NTG will have them.

There is an engine reassembly check list in the Technical Section of the IMGYTR website with torque settings too that you will find useful.

Hi Anil,
If you follow Neil Cairn's diary of rebuilding his engine you won't go far wrong its on our website.

Hi Anil

The Octagon do indeed provide all the parts that you will need. Are you intending to do the work yourself or is a specialist undertaking any necessary rebore etc?

As Peter has mentioned do follow Neil Cairn's diary on the MGCC Y Register site. He describes in great detail all the issues and frustrations etc! You can find this on www.mgccyregister.co.uk

Having had my engine rebuilt by Dave Knight in Northamptonshire I can recommend his work. Moreover, he has some experience in rebuilding XPAG's.
However, you are some distance away from him. You might like to look at John James's excellent website on Totally T Type 2. He includes recommended suppliers and there may well be one in your neck of the woods.

And yes as Paul mentioned you will have to take off the headlamps, radiator etc. Indeed whilst you have the rad out get it flow tested - always a handy measure whilst the lump is out.

Have fun!

Thanks Peter & Paul for your helpful suggestions. i will look up the article for further help.

The engine was re-built in Australia & the cylinder bores re-lined; it had done less than 5000 miles since then. I have checked availability of parts from Pete of
MGOCC, who was most helpful. Will be dismantling & re-assembling myself. Re-boring will be carried out by the local engineering company. The trick now is to ensure I label all parts in plastic bags or containers, to ensure I assemble correctly.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Just realised I have already got copy of LIVING WITH THE XPAG by Neil Cairns, which I purchased some years ago. Excellent hints by Neil on various items. Really well written and easy to follow.
