MG MG Y Type - RPM

I have a 1953 MG YB with T9 5 speed gear box.
I am looking for a chart/data as to the Engine RPM at given speeds in each Gear.
The car is running std diff, and 165 std tyres.

thanks in advance.

Not much use to you but my YA ignition sensor rev counter indicates 2000 revs at 30mph in 4th gear, I think the type 9 gearbox 5th gear is .83 ratio so a bit of complicated arithmetic should come to 36mph

Hello Vaughan,
I developed an Excel Spreadsheet for these calculations, where you can insert all the variables - diff ratio - gearbox ratio - rolling diameter.

I will talk to Paul Barrow about making it available in some way on the website.

In the meantime, if you send me an email via the IMGYTR website "Contacts", I can send you a copy directly.

The data is already there in "Hints & Tips" under "Higher Rear Axle ratios".

It's not a "live" spreadsheet, but you will have some answers there.

There is so much information on the website, it's hard to remember it all - and available for free....

Thanks Paul Barrow

Assuming standard diff ratio 5.125:1 and standard Ford type 9 five speed gear box.
1st gear; 3.65:1. 3.95 mph/1000rpm.
2nd gear; 1.97:1. 7.32 mph/1000rpm.
3rd gear; 1.37:1. 10.53 mph/1000rpm.
4th gear; 1:1. 14.42 mph/1000rpm.
5th gear; 0.82:1. 17.59 mph/1000rpm.

However, the 165x15 tyres have a diameter that is 2% larger than the original 5.50x15 tyres, so the above figures can be increased by 2%.

Still very low - useful to change the diff to 4.875:1 or 4.555:1.

Hi Tony Slattery.
Please email me a copy of the XL spread sheet. I could not find your email address (just me not used to this website). My email address is rich3nz@btinternet.com

Thanks to all others that have replied, the info is much appreciated.

Regards Vaughan.

No need to have it emailed - check out https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/hints&tips.shtml#Higher_ratio_rear_differential.

At the end of the thread/hint there is a link there for you to download it as a PDF file.
