MG MG Y Type - Rubber extrusion - door seals.

Folks, the unusual shape of the original draught excluder (on the body, not the seal on the door) is offered by Woolies in the UK as item R123; the woven material to cover it (if you want) is also available from Woolies. Problem for me is I'm in Australia - so the goods are 75 pounds and the postage is another 65 pounds.
Have any restorers in Australia/New Zealand found the right profile extrusion closer to hand? I'd love to hear from you.
Alternatively, we could change the design to incorporate more modern pinchweld, but it doesn't usually have the tail extending over the interior bodywork, enabling it to be tacked to "paper rope" or to plywood pieces, and covered with interior trim.
All advice gratefully received ... Regards, John.

Did you get a weight and dimension from them for the package? They are probably quoting shipment via DHL or FedEx. If you can get weight and dimensions try using http://www.parcelflight.co.uk/ - typically they are way cheaper ... and use regular carriers!! Dont forget to look at insured and tracked options though too.

There may also be duty payable on import to Aus but that will be the case in either shipment provider and will always be outside of the remit of the seller to control. Duty is always assessed these days off of the declared insured value so be accurate with that. You do not want to insure a package for £5.00 that has £75.00 worth of goods so you can undercut the duty ... and then lose the shipment in transit!

Personally I would fit a modern push on seal - ok its not original but can you really be bothered with all those tacks....if your a stickler for originality then maybe yes but its a lot of hard work.

I fitted the original seal from Woolies on my first resto and it is long and painstaking job that needs to be done before all the other trim and the floor boards are fitted. see my How To. http://www.mgccyregister.co.uk/technical-information/miscellaneous/bodywork-glass/fitting-new-door-draught-excluder Needless to say I fitted the plush snappon Edge Trim second time round on my YB. It still looks authentic for the era of the car.
As a point of interest we use the Beige Coach Lacing used to cover the original rubber seal to manufacture the rear side grab straps. It gives a very close copy of the originals that are no longer available. These are available from our shop.

Last December, I ordered for my YT 5m of R123 from Woolies (cost 15 pound) and 3m of R40 (6 pound) plus 17 pound for shipping to Gold Coast.

Ask if Woolies will break the order into 2 so they are smaller parcels and pay less overall shipping costs.

cheers Stuart

Peter - yes, I've read your report with great interest and was planning to follow the technique, until thwe cost of postage came up. Woolies did offer to adjust the postage, but their hands are tied due to the weight of the 12 metres of rubber.
I begin to lean towards using the Plush Furflex style of pinchweld instead - would Tony Slattery, Bill Spall, Neil Wakemen, Stuart Duncan or anyone else know where I might source the plush fuzzy pinchweld in Australia? Thanks all ... John.

My suggestion is to shop as local as you can (Cairns) - they may not have exactly what you want, but could get some samples in for you.

I have seen trimmers make their own Furflex using soft rubber tubing and wrapping it with a fabric strip with a long tail so you can nail it to the paper roll embedded in the body.

If you do decide to fit the original you may wish to consider the best way to join the two ends. Since doing mine I have seen the rubber and lacing joined at the same place by tucking the lacing back under each end of the rubber forming a smoother butt joint.
Any good trimmer supplies will send a short sample on request.
