MG MG Y Type - Running Board Rails

I am about to put on the metal rails with rubber strips on the running board of EXU 2659. The holes are already in the running board. What type of hardware do I need to fasten them to the car? Is there any easy way to connect the rubber to the metal rails?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim

I am just about to do this too and have been giving it some thought. This is what I have come up with.

Before starting I plan to score the back of each rail along the mid line. You will then need to offer the rails up to the running boards and bend them where appropriate to start off with and mark up which end is the front.

After that I think this is a two man job in that an assistant will need to hold one rail at a time in place and aligned at the top (so decide on a gap that you will have from the big rubber hidem to the top of the rail in advance so that all the tops are in the same distance on both sides). While the assistant holds the rail in place and moves it inboard/outboard so that I can see the line marked on the back coming through the ceter of the hole in the running board. At that time I will mark it with a center punch and then drill out the hole and fix it to the running board with a pop rivet. Then repeat the exercise at the other end and secure both ends before drilling and rivetting the middle ones.

As to getting the rubber strips in, you may need to dremmel away part of the underside where they will ride over the rivet heads, but otherwise they just pop into the rail channels.

I used countersunk bolts - that way if you need to respray the running board you can take the aluminium strips off.....and they do need respraying if you use the car, at least mine do![I spray my car in cellulose - from an old Apollo sprayer - its not a good finish particularly but it does me..not having the cash to get a sprayer to do it !]

Hi Jim

I agree with DM, countersunk screws is the way to go apart from easier repaint a lot of 'muck' gets under these strips, I have this problem with the TC. I used 4BA with nylock nuts, these are about 3.7 mm (0.15 inch) I don't know the US equivalent.

I never liked the running board aluminium strip system on MGs and often thought of glueing ribbed rubber to the running board as seen on other cars...I never got round to trying it but it would be more practical; if not orginal.

Paul,

I pop rivet the metal strips down. If you look closely, can see a small hump where the rivets are. I already had holes (and a few extra) in my running board. I think it would look better and be easier use flat head screws and nuts. The aluminum strips are very thin, so I would be hesitated in trying to counter sink it. There is already a "tunnel" in the base of the rubber. This should alleviate the small hump from the pop rivet.

Thanks Jim - will try to remember to get on this when I get home.
