MG MG Y Type - Securing your MG Y experience

Because your security is important to us at the International MG Y Type Register, we have upgraded from a simple http address to an https address (https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/) for all our pages on the International MG Y Type Register.

What does this means for you?
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. This keeps your information safe from hackers.

You should now see a padlock in the left corner of your browser address bar on all our pages.

Best wishes to you all from the International MG Y Type Register team.

Paul, nice to see you are protecting us all in the current cyber climate.
My browser alarmed me when I visited another site, I saw it was insecure, somehow I would not want to register with insecure, thought I'd warn users thinking of sharing private data to think before using the service.

Keep safe all.

Generally speaking it is not a major problem and not one that has, in the past, caused us issues or alarm at the IMGYTR. Indeed previously credit card payments to YZ Publications Inc. etc and our Donations page (https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/howtohelp.shtml) had always been handled via secure servers. However, as cyber crime becomes ever more of an issue, and also an increasing concern to the average person, we considered it appropriate (after receiving a concerned email from one of our members) to take very drastic action and secure the entire site regardless of the financial cost we incurred. Accordingly, overnight last night, we have revised all our pages (currently about 720) to provide a secure experience.

Paul,

Your sound, sensible update is reassuraning that in the IMGYTR owners and users of the IMGYTR website are in safe hands. I would have no issues in encouraging new owners to register their cars via the registration page on the website.

Doesn't it also concern you that Y Owners could update private data when registering with the MG Car Club alternative Y Register site and it would appear their site connection is not secure.
The only reason I comment is users of this forum are highly likely to use the services of the website and need to understand the possible risks of connection not being secure. I'm sure given time this too will be secured.

https://www.towerwatchtech.com/5-ways-your-emails-could-breach-gdpr/

I recall when I was previously a member of the MG Car Club receiving an updated newsletter from the Y Register and my personal identifyable information was shared in the "To" field as opposed to the "BCC" field it's issues such as this that can cause problems, when personal information is shared in such a way without the users consent.

Cheers

Richard

I certainly find the ever changing ground of technology very challenging to keep up with and trying to stay one step ahead of it is virtually impossible, especially with being a bunch of mere volunteers who's first love is firmly rooted in the past ... 70 plus years ago at least!

I am sure that Peter and the MGCCY also feel the challenge to stay in front of this stuff very daunting indeed and they too are volunteers so hopefully continue to gain from experiences as you describe. Hardly any of this comes intuitively!

In the IMGYTR we are very fortunate to have players like Mike Plumstead available to us who not only provides us with an excellent Bulletin Board Service, but also the Classified Adverts too. He also hosts all our files to run the IMGYTR website, and is always kind, professional, patient and very helpful to me to keep me on the straight and narrow. I think all of us owe Mike enormously for his wonderful kindness and generous support to us from Day One of our site.

For me - thank you Mike P!

Paul,

Concur that Mike P support to the IMGYTR is superb, none of the fantastic resources come for free. Hidden costs such as Reps travelling to get data and follow up on leads for cars cost personally to those contributing to the bigger picture, I recall few of these journeys and use of petrol at my own expense, I'm sure the other reps have done the same too. I guess your own outlay is best to not think too long about as it must over the years have mounted up to considerable amount.

THANK YOU for the work you do in maintaining the IMGYTR website.

As mentioned by Mike P in a reply to my post over on the TD BBS, he has upgraded the whole mg-cars.org.uk website software due most users now having better connection speed than when the BBS was created many years ago.

We can now view images in the posts without using an image link (users can change this feature by using the Customise menu)

Again PAUL & MIKE thankyou

cheers

Re the reference to the secure site note on the MGCC Y Reg site. I am told by our web provider Artisan, Google have forced the entire web community to enable SSL security on every website else their browser will report the address as insecure. Artisan is working through migrating all their sites to SSL security and are about to start on ours.
I appreciate the words of support from Paul and can assure all, that we are striving to keep up with the changing ground of technology even though we would prefer to be tinkering with our 70 year old technology.
