MG MG Y Type - Side Mirror

Anyone have any ideas where is best to buy nearside mirror for YT? NTG sell a mirror but price is more than I feel is justified. Anyone got any thoughts worth sharing on this topic? I have looked at a few photos on YT's on parade and see variety of mirrors, either rectangular or round, some on windscreen mountings some on the wings.

Do you mean a mirror to go on the wings/fenders of your car Richard? If so check out Gregorys Autoparts - see Links page under Suppliers and then General (I think that is where I have a link to them).

Richard I use the standard round wing mirrors with a convex lens for reversing and windscreen mirrors for driving. The system favoured by most TD drivers has a bar that bolts into the screen adjuster slot and then a rectangular mirror is clamped onto the end of the bar. These are widely available Moss or B&G but are quite expensive. I have a round mirror that pivots on the end of a bar that bolts into the screen adjuster on my near side. This looks more in keeping with the car. They are handed and hard to find, I have been keeping my eye out for an off side one to match for some time. If you trawl the sites and find one let me know. They fit and can be adjusted to the perfect position with the side screen not fitted, with it fitted they will just fit in one position that will allow the door to close and just miss it.

Hi Richard

I fitted the rectangular mirrors, as you would find on a TA-B-C, exactly as Peter has done. The advantage of the rectangular mirror is that you can adjust it to be either horizontally or vertically. Whilst they are more expensive than circular mirrors I do find that you can get a better field of vision. Moreover, in my opinion, they 'fit' the car better. There are also smaller versions available.

Whatever version you decide upon make sure that the chrome finish is over brass, otherwise you will find that the rust very quickly!

Suppliers include Paul Beck and both Moss and Gregory's.
I'll sort out s pic for you and establish some suppliers.

All the best

Have just checked up and the Complete Automobilist, Gregory's and Moss all provide them - but they aren't cheap - although they are chrome over brass and you will need the adjustable arm (approx £31 from Moss). The mirrors which are replica Lucas 160's are around £105 each including VAT - not cheap!

See below the mirrors fitted to the YT - they were considerably cheaper when I acquired mine!

All the best

Paul, Peter, Jerry,

Thanks for advice I was wanting to get the mirror sorted out for my trip to the Y Sommertreff a week Tuesday I go.

Finally got the YT back working and this is final jigsaw to assist with safety.
