MG MG Y Type - Sliding roof mechanism
Can anyone give me information about the function of the sliding roof locking mechanism? Since the end of last summer mine is stuck about 2 inches open, and the locking handle only produces a scraping noise upon turning it. I'd like to fix it this winter. First of all, how do I access the workings? |

Remove the wood side trim for best access. There are two screws one on either side at the front. Pull back the dust strip at the side with a finger and you should see the screw. loosen it and the slotted plate will slide towards the center to allow the roof to lift. The whole roof will then slide out over the front. You will need to remove the cloth to access the locking mechanism. Peter |

Peter, can't the mechanism be inspected without removing the roof? My problem is, it's stuck about 2 inches open and cannot be moved since the handle went out of engagement. |

Hello Remo, I now understand your problem and will do my best to help.
Can you remove the handle - there is a screw in the centre. If it's frozen, give it a spray with penetrating oil and wait a few hours & try again. Undo the screw, then tap the handle down to remove - a small slide hammer might help. I have spare handles if you need a replacement. The handle rotates two rods on either side at the rear to lock the roof upwards. From inside the car, peel back the lining of the sliding portion of the panel at the front corners. You will see a slotted screw. Remove the screw completely & slide the piece it retains towards the middle of the car until you can remove it completely - now do the other side. The roof may only be jammed at the front, in which case the removal of the front slides will allow you to pull the roof sliding panel forward and remove it from the car. If it won't move after removing the front slides you have a more difficult task ahead. Then you will need to remove the complete lining of the sliding panel to see what is going on. In the meantime, I will take some photos to explain the next process if needed. Good Luck, Tony Slattery International Y-Type Register Rep Queensland Australia |

Tony, I have a feeling that at this stage taking all the headlining will not expose any parts in the center that you can work on,as a last resort the h/lining would have to be removed if anything has gone wrong in the center then you have to drill out the spot welds holding the metal cover to the roof then after fixing fault re spot weld not doing the roof paint work any good.
