MG MG Y Type - Slip Ring Location

Hi

I am using a YA steering column with my YT - with its traficator and slipring arrangement and need to get the location of the slip ring right.
The register's "Y Sheet 1" Steering Column Electric by Jack Murray shows a distance of 11/16" (17.5mm) betwen slip ring and the centre of the circlip.

Since Jack Murrays drawing is a bit inexact (sorry), I wonder if the measurement is taken at the centre of the circlip (which would be unusual), or from the inner edge of the clip (which would be correct from an engineering point of view).

Hi Anton

It is best done by moving the top part until you get good continuity between the contacts and the steering wheel. The measurements are a guide only. Just move the outer part up and down ... until you hit the sweet spot where all the contacts work. It is trial and error but that is how it is.

You'll hit on it and at that time lock it into position.

Sorry Paul not correct, there should be no sliding up and down there is no adjustment.the fingers split carrier locate in a hole in the steering column this hole is 780/81 mm from the top of the column (the solid part NOT the splined extension)on the plain bottom half of the split fingers carrier when the cars were new was a peg which located in the hole but with age and possible ill treatment they tend to shear off resulting in movement of the fingers and then trouble with semiphores and horn. my answer to this problem was to fit a cutdown rollpin in the hole as a locater. a small hole has to be drilled in the plain half of the fingers carrier. great care is needed as if you put the pin too deep in the column you may catch the loom by the same token if you allow the pin to protude out of the carrier you will strike the fixed track carrier. will put photos of same shortly.

I forgot to add you may find it hard to find the hole as it is usally full of the flush broken off peg

Gentlemen

I think you are both right. It seems that Paul is referring to the outer "tubular" part of the slip-ring assembly, whilst John seems to be referring to the "inner" two semi circular parts that are held in place by two circlips.

Paul, I have to appoligise about having not properly read Jack Murrays remarks about the outer column being moved up and down using a twisting motion. See attachment "Slip-Ring Location & adjustment".

Thank you both for your support :o)

Thanks for the endorsement Anton - yes you will note in my comment I did say " Just move the outer part up and down" and was referring to the alignment of the OUTER part as I presumed that was where you were having the issue was it not?

For clarification the inner part is two pieces and is fairly fixed from memory to the inner column.

Paul & John, I did it!

Horn and indicators work like a dream. I can only recommend Jack Murray's article - specially the fault finding section.

Cheers

Good for you Anton, did you check to see if there is a pin locating the plain half of the center fingers section to the steering column?
there is a reason i ask this.
