MG MG Y Type - Snow
Topical at the moment has been the snow fall in the S.East. This picture was taken outside my parents house in Surrey in 1963 showing my 48 YA, the icicles under the car remained there for nearly a month. The old bus never failed to start on the handle and get me to work. Notice the bonnet lifted so that warm air driven over the manifold served as a demister, it certainly was better than driving with the frozen windscreen open! The long stroke engine and large wheels were a real advantage for grip on ice so that 3rd and top gear could be used at very low speeds. Essential kit was a spade, an old rug [for placing under the wheels] a screw jack and wooden blocks [the hydraulic jacks coulden't always be deployed, and sometimes they froze up] and two concrete blocks in the boot to help the reduced tyre pressured wheels to grip. The roads were rarely gritted and those that were salted refroze into deep ruts, which is where the front suspension and rack steering came into its own as the car danced and slithered its merry way along.

Interesting. Here, on this miserable side of The Pond, where our (and «your», I might add) European ancestors abandoned us centuries ago, we have developed snow-managing skills. One must first start by repeating, as a life-long mantra: «Snow is good. Snow is beautiful. Snow is my friend.» Once you have attained the Denial Plateau, you can eagerly wait for the next satanical storm with your nose gleefully pressed against the frosty window pane. Necessity makes you ingenious. Yes, there are ways to lead a perfectly normal life on days when Beelzebub throws 18 inches of snow at you. Here, in Canada, there are 4 seasons: 1) Before winter 2) Winter 3) After winter 4) Waiting for winter Click in «image» to see the remnants of our last winter, as photographed at the end of spring. ![]() |

Great picture Gilles, how do you go about starting the Y when its -20 C. and how come the road and side walks are so clear of snow. Over here we are in total confusion when 3 inches of snow falls. The stuff that falls on us is a wet variety of snow that would clog up your fancy snow blowers. In 1947 they tried using a jet engine mounted on a waggon to clear snow from a railway line [railroad], I understand that the snow stayed where it was and waggon disappeared. By the way if you care to couple up your mule train and head west to Vacouver you will find +8 C tomorrow, I can't help you more than that. |

Gilles With that pile of snow I am shocked that you havent gotten out there, parked your car up against it so that the shadow fell on the snow, and then marked out an outline and made a snow MG Y out of it!! What must you nbe thinking not to have done that! Bryan Great picture, you ought to send me that and your story as an email for Picture of the Month! Paul |

Oh dear,I am sorry for you people with all your snow difficulties. If it makes you feel any better today we had, in the fair city of Sydney +39C. And we have been promised +41C tomorrow. I don't know who invented air-conditioning but whoever it was deserved a knighthood at least. Alf |
