MG MG Y Type - Spark Plugs and Oil Filter
I've serached the archives and found differing numbers for the proper modern spark plug to use in my '53 YB. I found reference to both N9Y and N5C plugs. Which is correct? Also, is a standard TD oil filter cartridge the correct replacement for the original canister filter? Thanks all! |

Steve, The original YB Workshop manual says Champion L. 10.S 14mm (Champion NAB on later models) so with a '53 I would go for Champion NAB (or equivalent) if I were you. Gap should be 0.020 - 0.022". Paul |

Hi Steve My '52YB0998 uses NGK-IRIDIUM-Spark-Plug/BPR6HIX for many years. But, this IRIDIUM Plug can't get good performance by the adjustment of the thick fuel. @Usually, BP5HS is used for XPAG. (The standard of PLug may be a Japanese domestic standard.) Masaaki |

Steve - If you have the oil filter that is an integral part of the oil pump (horizontal filter housing) then the standard (late) TD/TF/MGA/early MGB oil filter cartrige will work. A few different part numbers are Hastings P172, AC AC32A, Fram CH814PL plus numerous others. Cheers - Dave |

Thanks all! Paul, I asked my local parts house guy for a set of Champion NAB plugs and he looked at me like I was from another planet. Do you have a source for them? |

Steve, The NAB code is probably a very old code. Ask your stockist to cross-reference the NGK BP5HS that Masaaki suggests to a Champion code, or better still buy the NGK! The N9Y (same as your MGB?) you found is probably too cold for a single carburettored Y. Here's some info on heat ranges http://www.championsparkplugs.com/charglossary.asp?kw=Heat+range |

The current equivalent Champion Spark Plugs are: L82 or L82C - Early XPAG engines with short reach plugs. N5 or N5C - Later XPAG engines (SC2 etc) Both of the above are still available. Regards. David prman @ mgytypes.org |

The size of NGK-IRIDIUM-Spark-Plug/BPR6HIX is the same as NGK-BP5HS. The electrode part of NGK-B5HS is short in comparison with BP5HS. The length of the screw is the same. The dimension of the outer electrode part. B5HS is about 3.5mm. BP5HS is about 6mm. T he length of the screw except for the washer is about 13.0mm. Masaaki |
