MG MG Y Type - Speedometer cable

I bought a new speedometer cable from the MG Octagon Car Club and whilst it looks well made it is a metal covered, very flexible one that's much wider than the original cable and so won't go through the hole in the chassis by the pedal. Any one else had this problem? MGOCC say this is the one they have always sold?
I may have to search around for the original type.Comments welcome!

Original type Speedo cables are available from Speedograph Richfield. See links page of website or go to: http://www.speedograph-richfield.com/index.html

I would check that the length of your metal cased cable is the same as your original. I know in the past Y Type Owners have received T Type Speedo Cables, not from your supplier, which 'will do the job', but are not correct.

Will order one - looking at the website they look very much like the original one I have. I found that when you pass it through the chassis you have to be careful not to damage the aluminium head which screws onto the back of the speedometer. Does the cable return through the wiring grommet hole? The end of the one I have broke off when trying to get it through the wiring grommet in the bulkhead.

The answer is YES.

I would say it will be easier to pass the speedo cable thruogh when there are NO wires in the grommet, and then rethread the wires after the cable.

More work ... just like you did not want any!

Oil has travelled from the gearbox via speedo cable to speedometer and this works intermittenly.

The speedometer will have to be cleaned but I'm wondering about the cable .

Should it also be cleaned or replaced?

I think if you are going to the trouble of getting the speedometer overhauled then it's best to fit a new speedometer cable.
