MG MG Y Type - Speeds Cable, metal cased

I have ordered a metal case speedo cable from one of the big Y-spares suppliers. When it arrived, there was a note attached, that the radius of any bend shouldn't be less than 6 inches (150mm).

1. This actually would disqualify the cable for us in the original mounting position of the Y Type - between chassis and brake master cylinder - especially with a hydraulic stop switch being fitted. How can one overcome this problem?

2. where does the cable re-enter the legroom to be connected to the rear of the speedometer?

Thank you

The cable route is through the gap between the master cylinder and the chassis rail - this maximises the radius.

In the photo attached, you can see where the speedo cable passes through the firewall just behind the rear carburettor. My speedo cable has a black plastic cover.

You should also refer to the diagrams in LTBY's for all the holes in the firewall & what goes where.

Thank you, Tony. The photo helped a lot!

1. Probably, I have to exchange the cable for a plastic coated one?! Routing it in the position between master cylinder and chassis rail results in a radius that is smaller than 6 inches.

2. Sorry, I had overlooked the caption of the elongated hole in LTBY's on page 262.

Hi Anton

Your biggest problem may be getting the thumb nut through the gap between the master cylinder and the chassis rail. Worst case just cut the weld between the pedal box and the chassis rail, pass the cable through and reweld the box to the rail.

You should be able to get the right angle with no problem. I have on several times at this!

Good luck. Speedograph are very good cables.

Thank you Paul
I'll have a look .....

It's easy to get the thumb nut through the gap - just run a bit of masking tape over the end of the cable and the thumb nut.

Feed it through from the rear & remove the tape once you get it through the firewall.

The tape also prevents road grime from fouling the cable & keeps it all nice & clean.

Cheers

Tony

PS - I have seen a few cars where the cavity between the pedal box & chassis was packed solid with dirt & stones - give this area a good clean out & paint before installing the speedo cable.

Paul, I was lucky and managed to pull the cable through without a problem by fastening a wire just behind the thumb nut.
Tony, good idea to wrap the end of the cable with tape. It sure helped to avoid the cable from getting stuck in the process.

Cheers

The nut on the head end is smaller than the gearbox so if you pull it forward that will work!
