MG MG Y Type - SPRING RUN 2011

The MGCC Y Type Committee when selecting a venue for the 2011 Spring Weekend decided that it would be sensible to move away from the Cotswolds and try a location further north. The aim of this was to encourage Y Type owners in the north midlands and the north of England to have closer access to this well established event and to broaden the spread and appeal of Y Type ownership.

However, the take up has been extremely dissappointing to date, So this is a reminder for those of you who live close to Hartington to get your Y Types out and join us on Sunday 15 May 2011 at Charles Cotton Hotel for a run to the Tramway Museum at Crich.

The details are on the Events Page on both this site and the MGCC Y Type Committee website.

You will also be aware that on the Saturday evening (14th May) there is our Annual Dinner - a 3 course meal for £20.

Please get your diaries out and do try and support this event. Download an application form and send a completed form to me.

I look forward to hearing from you. Further details can be found in the Aprl issue of Safety Fast and the March edition of the MG Octagon CC March edition of The Bulletin.

Thanks

Guys

We are only three weeks away from the 14th Annual Spring Run which as you ought to know is based in the Peak District.

One of the reasons for moving the event north was to encourage local Y owners to attend and enjoy meeeting fellow octabods and Y Type people. Sadly other than the regulars there are few of you showing up.

WHY? The event is open to ALL Y type owners, irrespective of whether or not they are MGCC owners.
Whilst I accept that fuel is expensive do remember that we get free road tax and cheap insurance. So why not get the old girl out ( and of course your wife/partner/mistress) and join us at Hartington at 10.00 am on Sunday 15th.

If you are choosing to attend then please let me know and e-mail me at: jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com or phone me on either 01926 424053/07855566325

As the saying goes in rugby and very apposite to older cars 'use it or loose it'

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best

Me too Corry - the Peak District is where I was born (Belper) and grew up (Derby/Ashbourne area) and I just love all the area round there. For this run I wish I were back in the UK too! The sight of a bunch of Ys in Dovedale will be awsome!

Every good wish Jerry and all who are going for a safe and succesful Run,

Paul

Jerry,
As you know, Rita and I have only ever missed one, possibly two Spring Runs since my YB was back on the road in 1997.
Each Run has been great fun and a chance to spend a little quality time with like minded Y Type owners. Since the change to include the Saturday evening meal was made, this has added value to the Event, especially if the distance is a concern.
So- if any of you owners north of Watford Gap want a good run out in the car, join Jerry and the gang for some fun. It doesn't matter what condition your car is in, concourse or banger, it's the Y Type that counts and the occupants that make the weekend. If it breaks down, there's bound to be someone there who can fix it, or there's always the RAC or AA. Please support Jerry as he and Jo puts an enormous amount of work into organising these events and he does it for YOU not just for himself.

The Spring Run is indeed always a good event and well done to all involved.

However can I put a cat in the middle of your pigeons (and maybe even point out the elephant in your room) and suggest that a future Spring Run might have increased (or at least different) attendance if it was held down South (please)?

With the Spring Run held so far up the country and the Autumn one even further...

To be honest much more than an hour or two behind the wheel of my YT and I need a lie down ;-)

Cheers,
Saul.
Saul Duck

Fair comment Saul. I have no idea of the geographical spread of Y ownership in the UK but I guess that the majority of English owned Y'a lie south of the Wash.

Certainly we will look to moving the 2012 event south and any suggestions of locations would be more than welcomed.

Sincerely

Jerry

In fairness though Saul, the Spring Run is a weekend event specifically so that you can travel to it, have a rest on the Saturday night, and then do the run on Sunday. Beautiful as Hampshire is, the Peaks are just as beautiful.

In the old adage "you cant please all of the people, all of the time" the move to the middle of the country from the Cotswolds should be given a couple of years for the Y owners from the North to be included at an equal travel distance as they have the same problems Southerners do. OK so there are fewer of them, but all the more reason to include them as there are many more events in the South of UK for MGs I think.

Having the Spring Run mobile in the UK overall I think is a great idea although it does pose great problems then for Jerry and Jo to organize. They do such a great job it would be a shame for someone not use their formula if geographic organization becomes a problem for J&J.

The idea of a North and a South UK Spring Run was suggested a few years ago and it was decided then that this was a great opportunity to try to bring Y owners together. For that, a little bit of personal discomfort is surely worthwhile to meet and socialize with other Y owners is it not?

I was discussing Saul's idea with Jo this morning and we both felt that somewhere like Dorset/Wiltshire does offer some great countryside and something different. It is also relatively near to the MGCC Y Register's Pres - namely Dennis Doubtfire ( West Somerset) who perhaps may be persuaded to fire up his YB and meet us all on the Saturday evening even if he does not wish to participate in the run.

Early days and I look forward to receiving a response from our regular punters as well as the wider Y Type fraternity.

All the best

Just a few words in support of Jerry's plea for more Y Typers to join us on the forthcoming Spring Run.

The Peak District is a beautiful part of the country (I know because I live there!) and I'm sure that Jerry and Jo will have,as always, cooked up a route that will show the area at it's best. Also, The Crich Tramway Museum will be an excellent venue for the end of the run, with much to interest everyone.

If any of you are reluctant to turn out because of concerns about the reliability of your Y Type, my domestic garage/workshop and it's small stock of spares is only 20 miles from Hartington and I'm happy to make it available to anyone in need.

Best wishes,

Bill

Guys,

Interesting thread, and I think Paul again sums up an accurate point "you cant please all of the people, all of the time!"
In respect of the Spring Run and how to maximise numbers is a difficult one. It is by far the best motoring event (Biased I know) but for Y Owners it still offers the most Y type cars at a single one event.

The best option I think is to conduct a questionnaire to establish answers to what is the threat assessment! In other words what are the threats that put people off attendance? Is it cost? Location? Distance to travel? The Format? The accomodation, the dates (time of year), too many/too few days.

Perhaps by consulting owners on these and any other issues first will provide the answers. My own view is thinking simply about location is missing the other factors.

A suggestion would be a convoy of cars to the European event of the year in Aviemore in 2013 to act as Spring Run event incorporating on a influx of Y's on arrival at the main event to show what a dedicated, and good bunch Y Owners are. Lets start in the south and pick up cars on route northwards!
As frustrating as it may be not to have an increase in numbers, take satisfaction that you organise the best event, you do a good job Jerry and owners love it! Simply why change it!

Here hopes for good weather in May!
