MG MG Y Type - Starter Handle
| I am thinking of ordering a starting handle from NTG and a couple of clips to mount it. My question is where is it mounted? In the boot? Where in the boot? I cannot find information on the proper mounting spot. Also, should it be mounted with clips or a bracket as shown on NTG? Thanks, Steve Van Ess |

| Hi Stephen It is not mounted in the boot. It is mounted on the rearmost part of the SWC floor. See Let there be Ys as I believe it details it in there. Paul |

| HI Paul, I am going to admit my ignorance. What is a SWC? And how is it mounted? |

| SWC = Spare Wheel Compartment ?? |
| Stephen Van Ess |
| Stephen Looking from the back it fits at the left hand side of the SWC near to the wheel arch , two clips are fitted to the floor for it . The handle rests on the lower part of the floor and I dont think it is clipped but not sure. Somewhere , maybe in LTBYs is a diagram . I think the pump fits parallel and to the right of the starting handle . Good luck John B |

| Steve,
I have dealt with NTG for some 40 years. Top quality parts and service, and the sole supplier/source for many parts unique to Y Series cars v T Series. I recently submitted a small order, totalling some $40 USD. Trump tariffs completely complicated things. Instead of receiving the parts in a week, it took a month w/multiple messages/charges/third party companies involved. Be advised: tariffs and shipping doubled the price of the parts, despite us not having to pay UK VAT. I would advise you rethink your order to consolidate all the Y parts you may need to order from NTG or any other British or foreign supplier. None of this is the fault of NTG, completely due to orange man. Let's Go, TACO! Rocky |

| G'day Rocky
The freight setup to the US from here is ridiculous. The P.O. will only accept small packages now, anything else has to go through a freight company which as you say gets nailed by orange man.. The P.O. used to accept stuff up to 1m long and up to I think it was 20Kg but not now it's just normal little postage items. I regularly get packages from the UK delivered direct in the post with no extra charges and usually arrive within a week. Anything from the US now takes at least a month. Although, my wife had to send a package to over your side of the US here a couple of weeks ago and the lady at the PO recomended writing the value right down and sending it as a gift---10 days and it was there with no extra orange charges---might be worth keeping in mind if you're ordering more stuff , just depends on if the sender will help by writing the 'gift' thing on the package. | Yes Stephen - SWC is common abbreviation for Spare Wheel Compartment area. Do you have a copy of Let there be Ys? Paul |
| Paul Barrow |
| It might be in the US Paul but this is an international list. Ian |

| Hi Ian If you go back through my posts to the BBS since its inception (when I lived in the UK till 2004) I have frequently referred to it as the SWC as have many others. Sorry if anyone was confused SWC is so much easier to type repeatedly. Paul |

| So to return to Stephen's original question concerning the layout of the SWC or (Spare Wheel Compartment) I am attaching 2 photos I took tonight of the very original layout of Y 0833 which I am currently breaking (it is completely beyond economic restoration before anyone gets too upset :( ).
The first picture shows the 4 clips in 2 parallel rows running front to rear on the left side of where the spare wheel is located. The left most pair are for the Sutty foot air pump, and the right most pair are for the long part of the starting handle. The second picture shows the 5 clips on the lower (rear most part) or tool tray. These are mounted on the right of the spare wheel bracket that secures the spare wheel in place. Four of these run left to right (laterally) and one runs front to rear. These were for the Jackall pump handle (2) and for the wheel brace (3). (It is possible that one of these may have been turned through 90 degrees as it has been many years since this car had ANY tools in the rear!) All of the clips are bolted through the floor with 1/4 Whitworth bolts and nuts. The above layout is good for MG Y and YT only as the MG YB had a different wheel brace - more of that later though. | This picture is from Let there be Ys and shows the layout in what is possibly Y 4070.
As to the size of clips Stephen, NTG recommend their part number X209D (https://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p7138_Clip-Starting-Handle-_-Tools.html), however the ones in Y 0833 are clearly more like X209C (https://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p7316_USE-X209D.html). What is interesting is that in the Illustrated Parts List for the MG Y One and a Quarter Litre Page 24 states 2 clips - Part Number S52/2 are for the Jackall handle. And Page 70 2 S52/5 for the Pump, and 4 S52/2 for the wheel brace and starting handle with another 1 S52/1 for the wheel brace too. This gives a total of 7 clips ... but Y 0833 definitely has 9 clips. I will measure the clips in more detail tomorrow but the ones for the pump will definitely need to be wider than the others! Paul

| Stephen I just remembered there is a Y/YT dimensional drawing of the tool clip layout on https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/parts.shtml. Hopefully this helps. Paul PS The YB is slightly different. Maybe I should work on getting one for the YB too? |
