MG MG Y Type - Starter motor
Anyone ever fitted a pre engaged starter motor to a YB....is it worth it...its just that I flich when I consider the normal one hitting the ring gear. Too used to modern stuff these days... |

Its a hell of a job getting in and out Dave as the exhaust has to come off as you know, but I think you hit the nail on the head - too used to modern stuff! I'd stay with the old stuff - hasnt failed in 70 years - it is likely to out live us LOL! Paul |

Hi Dave, There is no need to disconnect the exhaust when removing the starter motor. Undo the radiator support bar at the body end and there is sufficient room with a bit of jiggling and twisting to remove the motor. Likewise when replacing. For the top bolt in the corner use a narrow socket with extension bars fed through the back of the exhaust pipe with the ratchet at the front end by the radiator. Paul |

Ever tried to remove & then re-fit the starter motor on a YA? you know, the large one with 3 bolts? the exhaust has to come off and so does the steering column have to be released from the rack. A real pleasure of a job! The WSM doesn't tell you everything! David |

I have had success in removing the larger early 3 bolt starter motors without disconnecting the steering column. Is you remove the body stay and the exhaust there is just enough room, but not easy. I use a socket head cap screw to overcome the access issue to tighten the top bolt on the starter. And one more tip - make sure the terminals on the slip ring face up - you need that little more space to shift the starter clear. Good Luck Tony |

Thanks David - thought I was on the right track but it has (fortunately) been a long time since I had to touch the starter motor. There you go, I just jinxed myself! Paul |

today we were at a classic car show no problem the starter runs without problems I love such old parts that can still be repaired with new cars such a part just goes in the trash |

First class job, Franz. Your tremendous efforts make me feel ashamed. On your web thing on MG Experience, or somewhere, you mention the 3-D printing thing. Would they be strong enough to use for a replacement boot catch? Well done on the car. Fabulous job. Best wishes, Andy |

Thx :-)
boot catch? do you have a picture from the original part ? you have read my post about the Thread: MGYT door trim today it is possible to print 1000 different materials but with the simple home printer it could be difficult but you can print a prototype and everyone can try to design it with a freeware programm like freecad, you have to learn a little bit after work i have a lot of work in my large garden, 2 years i haven t done something there, also i will update my house so i can reduce the energy also i use my ebike every day to reach my work 32 km less time for my cars ;-( |
