MG MG Y Type - stearing wheel

any one no wher I can either get mine reconditioned or a good second hand one
p west

You could bear in mind that steering wheels that fit the Y were also fitted to other cars of the period such as the Morris Oxford MO series I think but the colour was different. I am sure there may be something on this site about restoration work.
D MULLEN

As David says, the color is different on MO ones. The TD was closer.

However Paul, have you read the page in the MG Y website on how to repair your steering wheel yourself? The website covers many of these typical items so always worth using the search engine first and type in something like "STEERING WHEEL". In this case the returns will bring up "How to repair a steering wheel for an MG Y Type" which can be found on http://www.mgcars.org.uk/imgytr/swheelrep.shtml.

Hope this helps you. I will also be pleased to recieve any recommendations for the links page from members who have had their steering wheel repaired and have had that wonderful mottled color restored so we can add them to the site too.

A quick internet search for UK website references in Google (http://www.google.com/search?q=steering+wheel+restoration&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=#sclient=psy&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb%3AIE-SearchBox&q=steering+wheel+restoration+UK&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=4ef1ed213f96a03d) turned up some possible options for you too Paul, and if you drop the UK off then http://www.google.com/search?q=steering+wheel+restoration&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=#sclient=psy&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb%3AIE-SearchBox&q=steering+wheel+restoration&aq=f&aqi=g5&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=4ef1ed213f96a03d brings up more options too.

Let me know if you find a good vendor and if you need a picture of the mottled effect on the steering wheel I can take a picture of mine which is in good condition and I can post that here for you too.

Good Evening

I own one taken off my 1953 YB about 40 years ago. At present it is attached to a steering column which is in turn attached to a steering rack. I will be be putting each item on E-Bay once I can work out how to avoid having to use Paypal and also being able to access the assembly where it is currently stored. It is in really quite nice condition and is complete with horn button.

Hello Clive

Why not sell via the corresponding section here, instead of e-Baying them ? Is the contact set/slip ring assembly for horn and trafficators there, and in good condition ? I could use one, as attempts to repair mine have more or less failed.

Good Evening Reno

Thank you for your suggestion. The thing is though that to get the best prices I need to auction these items because I don't really know what to charge. Also a number of people have expressed an interest and it does seem the fairest way. I have looked at one supplier's website and they are charging well over £100 for reproduction steering wheels not including the horn button and clockwork indicator mechanism which forms part of mine, which is the real thing of course.

As I recollect it the steering column slip ring casing was O.K. and the slip ring system certainly worked perfectly but that was forty odd years ago of course.

The steering rack was O.K. in that it came off the car which was still just within it's M.O.T. but there is no knowing whether it would have passed another one. again. As I recollect it there was no play in the steering but again I refer to things from memory of 40 years ago.

One obstacle at the moment is my wish to avoid using Paypal. Following a number of incidents where I requested very prominently that people did not pay by this method some winning bidders did just that. There was a particularly unpleasant incident with one would be buyer of quite a low value item last Autumn who tried to give me a bad name and I have just about had enough. I hope to get advice shortly from someone better than me at using E-Bay.

A further obstacle is the fact that these components are in a friend's container and very difficult to access, especially since I have not been very fit recently.

You may not have noticed on the register that there is an M.G. autojumble being held at Stoneleigh in the English midlands shortly. Perhaps it might be worthwhile coming over and combining a shopping trip with a holiday?

Hi Clive,

Please take in account (pardon my pun) that by using Paypal you are able to sell to much more (eBay) buyers than you would without.

My wife sells quite a lot of small items on eBay and sends them all over the globe. She mutters frequently about the costs involved but also says that would most of her sales would not be possible without eBay and Paypal.
My point is that with eBay and Paypal, as a whole you'll get much more for your dismantled Y than you would when you had to sell it through magazines and autojumbles?

Good Evening Willem

As to using E-Bay itself I agree with you, but I will not give my bank account number out over the Internet.

I did, very reluctantly, give E-Bay my credit card numbersso that I could use their service. This means that money paid into my Paypal account just sits there until it is used up in paying comission charges to E-Bay on items that have been paid for in other ways.

As I understand it, rightly or wrongly, money from my Paypal account cannot be paid into my credit card account. Certainly it is reasonable to pay E-Bay their commision and there can be no objection to that but I would rather not give them two bites of the same cherry since I think that they own Paypal.

When I first mentioned thatI wanted to avoid having to use Paypal someone in Australia contacted me almost immediately since he also had had the very frustrating experience of people insisting on paying this way when very clearly being asked not to do so. That is the main problem so I am not the only one who takes this attitude.

Am I correct in thinking that after having sold 10 items it is not neccessary to continue to offer Paypal as a payment method?

Was it you that wanted a gearbox some time ago by the way? It didn't sell and I have still got it.

I'll have to look into it, but I know almost for sure that with Paypal in the Netherlands you can transfer your Paypal-money to your normal account, although I'm also convinced that Paypal will charge you for that.

I usually protect my wife Liesbeth against these costs by paying for MY eBay purchases with HER eBay earnings, that's only fair isn't it?

We did "talk" about the 'box but my interest in your parts is latent at best now; the bathroom is leaking and to cure it the best way is probably forking out for a new bathroom.....
Willem vd Veer

Thanks Willem. I like the idea of offsetting Paypal payments but unfortunately I do not have a wife!

Sorry to hear about your bathroom problem.
